Ippuku Tea House is a Japanese café and restaurant at 15 Blake Street in central York. A small dining room and specialist tea service create an intimate setting, with the business drawing on Japanese food and tea traditions since 2013.
Donburi rice bowls include thinly sliced beef in a light sauce, teriyaki chicken or tofu and tamago don made with a loose Japanese style omelette. Teishoku sets add steamed rice, miso soup, pickles and a vegetable side to dishes such as teriyaki or ginger marinated pork.
Gyoza, grilled rice balls and other small dishes can be added around the main meal. Vegan tofu versions appear across the menu, while the balance of rice, pickles, soup and carefully seasoned protein gives the set dishes a homestyle Japanese structure.
The tea selection is as important as the food, with staff able to explain different Japanese varieties and preparation styles. Pastries and light desserts make the tea house useful for an afternoon visit, while later opening on Fridays and Saturdays supports a relaxed dinner.
