Community guidelines

Last updated October 15, 2026

Members log where they eat, rate and review, share photos, make lists and follow each other. Reviews only help people choose where to eat if they are honest, so these guidelines apply to everything you post: reviews, ratings, photos, lists, comments and your profile.

Be honest

  • Only review places you have eaten at or ordered from, and describe your own experience.
  • Don't review a business you own, work for or have a personal or financial connection to, or one you compete with.
  • Don't accept or offer payment, free food, discounts or other rewards in exchange for a review or rating. If you were given a free meal, for example as an invited guest, say so clearly in your review.
  • Don't write reviews for someone else, swap reviews, or use more than one account.
  • Keep ratings about the food, drinks, service and experience, not about unrelated disputes.

Be kind

  • Criticise the food or the service, not people. No insults, threats, harassment or hate based on race, ethnicity, religion, disability, gender, sexuality, age or any other part of who someone is.
  • Don't share personal information about staff, other diners or other members, such as full names, photos of their faces, contact details or details about their lives.
  • Disagree with other members respectfully in comments.

Stick to what you know

  • Share what you saw and tasted. Don't present guesses as facts, and don't accuse a business of crimes or health breaches in a review. If you think a venue is unsafe or unhygienic, report it to the Food Standards Agency (food.gov.uk) or your local council.
  • Never rely on reviews, or on menus on this site, for allergy information. Menus and prices change, so always check with the restaurant.

Photos

  • Post only photos you took, of the food, drinks or venue.
  • Avoid photos in which other diners or staff can be recognised, and don't post photos in which children can be identified.
  • No nudity, violence or anything unrelated to your visit.

Lists and comments

  • Lists should be about places to eat and drink. Their titles and descriptions follow the same rules as reviews.
  • Comments should add to the conversation. You can delete comments on your own reviews and lists.

No spam or promotion

  • Don't use Happy Menu to advertise, promote other websites or services, post the same thing repeatedly, or follow people in bulk.
  • Restaurant owners and staff: please don't post about your own venue, and don't offer customers anything in return for reviews.

How reviews work on Happy Menu

  • Anyone with a member account can rate and review. We don't check that each visit happened, so please report reviews that seem fake.
  • Reviews on restaurant pages are shown newest first. Each member's latest rating of a restaurant counts once, and its average member rating appears once 5 members have rated it.
  • Restaurants can't pay to remove, hide or reorder reviews, and we don't pay or reward members for reviewing.
  • A new member's first 3 reviews, photos, lists and comments are checked before they appear. After that, posts appear straight away.
  • Anyone signed in can report a post. A post reported by 3 members is hidden until we review it.

Reporting

Use Report on any review, photo, list or comment that breaks these guidelines. Reports are private: the member you report is not told who reported them.

What happens when something breaks the guidelines

We may remove posts, hide content while we look into a report, or ban accounts, depending on how serious or repeated the problem is. When we ban an account, its profile, reviews, photos, lists, comments and ratings disappear from the site.

Our privacy policy explains what is public and how we handle your information.
