Best Restaurants Near Me In Soho and the West End

Soho and the West End compress an extraordinary amount of eating into a few walkable streets. A theatre crowd can be finishing an early supper while late-night diners are only choosing a table, and a polished tasting counter may sit around the corner from a tiny room built around buns, kebabs or hoppers. That density is exciting, but it also makes a useful range more valuable. The best restaurants here combine distinctive menus with sustained food praise and a clear reason to choose them among the hundreds of alternatives nearby.

The neighbourhood moves from Bombay café cooking, Indo-Chinese plates, vegan food, Taiwanese buns, Persian grilling, seafood, Chinese hot pot, modern Indian small plates, Spanish tapas and Sri Lankan flavours. Some rooms suit a quick solo meal before a show; others reward a table willing to share and linger. Use the descriptions to match the format to your occasion, because a counter stool at Barrafina, a bubbling pot at Haidilao and a spread of dishes at Dishoom ask very different things of a night out.

Menus in central London change with seasons, ingredient availability and individual branches. Confirm the address when booking, particularly for groups with several central London branches. Check the current menu to compare its available dishes and prices, then confirm anything time-sensitive when booking. For popular rooms, reserve where the restaurant permits it or plan a flexible arrival if the experience is built around walk-ins.

Bombay-style curry, grilled meats and sharing dishes at Dishoom Carnaby

Dishoom Carnaby

Dishoom Carnaby turns the all-day Bombay café idea into one of the West End’s most flexible meals. Breakfast can mean a bacon naan roll and chai, while lunch and dinner move through street snacks, grills, biryani and comforting bowls designed for sharing. This branch has its own music-inspired story, and the lively, layered room suits friends who want atmosphere without committing to formal dining.

Start with vada pau or okra fries, then add a grill dish and something saucy. The current Carnaby menu highlights methi gosht with flaky paratha, while chicken ruby and the slow-cooked house black daal remain useful anchors for a first visit. Chole puri halwa brings chickpeas, pickles, sweet semolina and a crisp, inflated puri into one generous plate; paneer roomali and chicken kathi rolls make more compact pre-theatre choices. Peak queues are part of the branch’s reputation, so book when eligible or allow time. The payoff is a menu broad enough for breakfast, a fast lunch or a celebratory spread.

Address: 22 Kingly Street, Carnaby, London W1B 5QP

Indo-Chinese sharing dishes at Fatt Pundit in Soho

Fatt Pundit

Fatt Pundit specialises in the Indo-Chinese food associated with Kolkata’s Hakka community, where Chinese techniques meet Indian spice, chutneys and heat. The Berwick Street room is compact and energetic, and the menu works best as a sequence of small plates passed around the table. Momos are the natural opening: steamed dumplings arrive with a sharp, punchy chutney that prepares the palate for the bolder dishes. Crackling spinach adds sweetness, crisp texture and yoghurt, while popcorn cauliflower and Hakka chilli paneer give vegetarians substantial choices rather than token substitutes.

From there, decide whether the table wants seafood, meat or both. Bombay chilli prawns and crunchy pepper crab lean into spice and texture; Malabar monkfish curry is rounder and more aromatic. Kolkata chilli chicken, dry chilli ribeye and noodles or burnt ginger rice can turn several starters into a full dinner. It is easy to over-order because dishes arrive quickly, so ask for guidance on spice levels and keep something cooling on the table.

Classic Taiwanese bao buns at BAO Soho

BAO Soho

BAO Soho is small, precise and especially good for diners who enjoy sitting at a counter. The classic bao remains the essential first order: a soft steamed bun holds braised pork, herbs and a fine layer of peanut powder, balancing sweetness, fat and savoury depth in a few bites. Taiwanese fried chicken brings a different kind of pleasure, with a light, jagged crust and a bright hot sauce. The menu may look compact, but it moves beyond buns into rice dishes, pickles and carefully tuned drinks, which gives a short meal enough variation.

The guinea fowl chi shang rice is the dish to add when snacks alone will not be enough, pairing well-textured rice with tender meat and a rich confit yolk. Solo diners should look for the branch’s set format when available, as it gathers several signatures without requiring a large table. A plum-forward umeshu Negroni suits the food’s sweet-sour edges, while the Horlicks ice-cream bao makes a playful finish. Seating is limited and many stools have no backs, so book ahead if timing matters.

Charcoal-grilled koobideh kabab at Berenjak Soho

Berenjak Soho

Berenjak channels Tehran’s compact kabab houses through a warm Soho room where the tandoor and charcoal grill drive the meal. Begin with taftoon bread and mazeh so that the table has something cool, smoky and sharp before the meat arrives. Hummus, strained yoghurt and coal-cooked aubergine reward repeated scooping, while pickles, herbs and salads prevent the meal becoming too rich. The open kitchen gives counter seats energy, but the close layout can feel cramped; come for the cooking and interaction rather than a quiet, spacious dining room.

Koobideh is the clearest expression of the grill: seasoned minced lamb develops char while staying juicy, then lands on flatbread with herbs, lemon and roasted tomato. Jujeh brings saffron-marinated chicken, and mixed grills make sense for first-time groups that want to compare cuts and marinades. Add rice or a khoresht when the table needs softness and depth beside the smoke. Berenjak suits two to four people who are happy to share everything. Demand is high, so reservations deserve planning.

Colourful plant-based sharing dishes at Mildreds Soho

Mildreds Soho

Mildreds has served Soho since the late 1980s, and its current Lexington Street home shows why the restaurant remains useful in a much more crowded vegan market. The cooking travels widely without treating plant-based food as a narrow category. Kimchi gyoza can sit beside chorizo-style arancini, a Sri Lankan-influenced kiri hodi pilau or a shiitake and peanut laksa. Sauces, pickles, nuts and herbs provide the richness and contrast that meat or dairy might supply elsewhere, so a shared table feels colourful and complete rather than worthy or restrained.

The tasting and sharing formats are the easiest way to understand the kitchen, especially for diners who want several flavours without negotiating every plate. A shawarma-style kebab or burger covers the comfort-food end, while salads, curries and smaller vegetable dishes keep the meal bright. Recent diner feedback is strong, though some guests find the seating tight or the pace slower at busy times. Reserve for a peak evening and mention allergies directly, because the globally influenced menu uses nuts, sesame and other common allergens in many dishes.

Grilled lobster and shellfish platter at The Seafood Bar in Soho

The Seafood Bar

The Seafood Bar makes sense when the group wants choice more than ceremony. Oysters can begin the meal alone or lead into a large fruits-de-mer platter, and the menu ranges through shellfish, whole fish, pasta and grilled dishes without losing its focus. A cold plateau is the most theatrical order, allowing diners to compare oysters, crab and other shellfish with simple dressings. For something warmer, lobster, mussels and clam-led pasta move the meal from raw freshness toward butter, garlic and broth.

The best approach is to order around the table rather than ask every diner to follow an identical course. Recent recent feedback praises the freshness and range, particularly oysters and clam spaghetti, while recurring comments about pace and value suggest allowing time and checking what a platter includes. If whole fish or seafood is offered by weight, confirm the size and total before ordering. This is a broad seafood choice and works well when one table wants raw shellfish, another diner wants grilled fish and someone else prefers pasta.

Hot-pot broths, sliced meat and vegetables at Haidilao Piccadilly

Haidilao Hot Pot London Piccadilly

Haidilao turns dinner into a participatory event. Choose a divided pot if the table wants to compare broths: a fragrant tomato base, mushroom broth or gentler bone broth can share space with a chilli-heavy option. Thinly sliced beef and lamb cook in seconds, while tofu, mushrooms, leafy vegetables and noodles change texture as the meal progresses. Shrimp paste and tripe appeal to more adventurous diners, and the sauce station lets everyone build a dip around sesame, soy, herbs, garlic or chilli rather than accept one fixed flavour.

Add ingredients gradually and keep raw and cooked utensils separate; staff can explain timings if the group is new to hot pot. Hand-pulled noodles bring theatre but also work practically at the end, absorbing the now-concentrated broth. A large number of diners praise the attentive service, although some recent feedback questions value and occasional disposable tableware. Order with restraint at first, because plates accumulate quickly, and confirm any weight-based seafood total before it enters the pot.

Modern Indian curry and flatbread at Kricket Soho

Kricket Soho

Kricket’s Denman Street kitchen applies modern technique and British produce to flavours drawn from across India. The long marble counter is the best seat for watching plates leave the open kitchen, while downstairs communal tables suit a larger group. The menu is seasonal, yet its structure stays clear: snacks lead into small plates, tandoor cooking, curries and grains. Tomato rasam pani puri opens with sourness and spice, and fried idli with mushroom, black garlic and shiso shows how confidently the kitchen can move beyond familiar restaurant-Indian combinations.

Current recommendations include Tamil beef keema pulao cooked with seeraga samba rice and bone marrow, plus duck-leg kothu parotta with green beans, peanuts and black-pepper masala. At lunch, a thali built around chicken mappas or grilled squash makhani offers a compact introduction and is practical before a matinee. Dinner rewards more sharing: choose one or two snacks, a vegetable plate, something from the grill and a deeper curry rather than ordering only rich dishes. Kricket suits curious diners who want recognisable Indian flavours in unexpected arrangements. The pace is lively and very Soho, while the cooking is thoughtful enough for a special meal.

Garlic prawns at Barrafina Dean Street

Barrafina Dean Street

Barrafina Dean Street is built around an L-shaped marble counter and the rhythm of plates arriving when ready. The current menu keeps the fundamentals sharp: ham croquetas, pan con tomate, padrón peppers and made-to-order tortillas provide a dependable opening. From there, seafood shows the kitchen at its best. Scallop crudo, chipirones, octopus and red prawns rely on excellent ingredients and concise cooking, while arroz de carabineros brings more depth and is worth sharing.

Meat and vegetables keep the order balanced. An oxtail mollete offers richness in a compact form, chicken thigh comes with romesco, and aubergine with garlic cream or fennel with ajo blanco can reset the table between stronger plates. Daily specials depend on what has arrived that morning, so ask what the kitchen is most excited about before finalising the order. This branch is walk-in only and has just a small number of stools, making flexibility essential. It is particularly good for solo diners and couples who enjoy watching chefs work; larger groups will find the format more difficult. Arrive early, order in waves and leave room for Santiago tart.

Sri Lankan and South Indian sharing feast at Hoppers Soho

Hoppers Soho

Hoppers Soho draws on Sri Lankan toddy shops and South Indian street-side cooking, serving food that is strongest when several textures meet on the same plate. A hopper’s bowl-shaped, lacy edge and soft centre make it both bread and utensil; an egg hopper adds richness before sambols and kari bring heat, coconut and acidity. Dosas offer a crisper route, while short eats create a useful first round. The compact Frith Street room is lively and close-set, so the meal feels social even at a small table.

Build the order around one kari or roast, then add a hopper, dosa or string hoppers and enough sambol to change each mouthful. Kothu, made from chopped roti tossed with vegetables, spice and a chosen filling, is the comfort-food option and can anchor a meal on its own. The current branch menu also provides vegetable and vegan routes, which helps a mixed group share broadly. Hoppers works for a date, a casual lunch or a pre-theatre dinner where bold flavour matters more than a long formal service. Reservations are available for small parties, and a virtual queue handles walk-ins; either is preferable to standing outside at the busiest times.

Address: 49 Frith Street, London W1D 4SG

Final Thoughts

Soho’s strongest restaurants succeed by committing to a format. Dishoom and Mildreds are adaptable all-day choices, while Fatt Pundit, Berenjak and Hoppers reward a table that shares. BAO is the compact counter stop; Kricket is the inventive small-plates dinner; Barrafina pairs tapas with the theatre of an open kitchen. The Seafood Bar gives shellfish lovers the widest canvas, and Haidilao turns the group itself into part of the cooking.

Choose according to time as well as appetite. BAO or a Kricket lunch can fit around a performance, while hot pot, a Persian grill spread or a seafood plateau deserves a less hurried evening. Check the current menu, confirm seasonal dishes and any weight-based pricing, then plan for reservations or queues. In a district with almost unlimited choice, matching the restaurant’s rhythm to your occasion is the simplest way to turn a convenient central table into a memorable meal.
