Indian curries, biryani and grilled dishes arranged for sharing in Edinburgh

Edinburgh's Indian and South Asian restaurants offer far more than a single familiar curry-house formula. Across the city, Nepalese kitchens fold delicate momo and simmer mountain-style curries, Punjabi specialists turn vegetables and seafood into crisp pakora, and ambitious grills match Scottish produce with tandoor heat. There are bustling sharing restaurants for a sociable dinner, intimate neighbourhood rooms for an unhurried meal and polished destinations built around tasting menus. The range makes choosing by cooking style and occasion more useful than simply looking for the nearest dining room.

A good first decision is whether you want several small plates or one complete main. Mother India's Cafe and The Pakora Bar reward a table that orders widely, while Dishoom's grills, biryani and house daal are at their best as a shared spread. Gurkha Bar, Solti, The Khukuri and Gautam's bring Nepalese flavours into sharper focus, from steamed dumplings and thukpa to charcoal-cooked meat and slowly developed sauces. Chaskaa, Prahna and Haldi take a more contemporary route, using regional ideas, careful presentation and less predictable ingredient combinations.

Compare current dishes and prices before booking or ordering. Menus, specials and availability can change, so check directly when one particular plate is essential to your visit. Ask the restaurant about allergens and cross-contamination rather than relying on a dish name, especially with fried food, breads, dairy-rich sauces and shared grills. Edinburgh offers an unusually broad cross-section of Indian and Nepalese dining.

Nepalese curries, rice and noodles at Gurkha Bar in Edinburgh

Gurkha Bar And Restaurant Edinburgh

Gurkha Bar stands out for the breadth and confidence of its Nepalese cooking. Momo are a natural opening order, giving the table a choice of soft dumpling wrappers, savoury filling and a punchy dipping sauce before the richer dishes arrive. Thukpa offers a warmer, broth-led alternative, while the Nepalese curries bring aromatic spice without forcing every plate into the same level of heat.

The restaurant's Brougham Place address is especially handy for Tollcross, Bruntsfield and an evening around the King's Theatre. The room feels suited to both an easy dinner for two and a larger table that wants to explore several parts of the menu. Balance is the key to ordering: pair one momo selection with a grilled dish, a curry and either rice or bread, then add more only if the table needs it. Diners looking beyond standard curry-house choices should make this their first stop, particularly when Nepalese flavours are the main reason for going out.

Address: 6 Brougham Place, Edinburgh EH3 9HW

A generous spread of Indian dishes at Dishoom Edinburgh

Dishoom Edinburgh

Dishoom brings the all-day energy of a Bombay-inspired café to St Andrew Square. At breakfast, the bacon or haggis naan rolls provide the clearest introduction: soft naan, a runny egg or savoury filling and sharp chilli-tomato jam in a format that is easy to eat. Later, the house black daal is the anchor, cooked for depth and designed to sit beside grills rather than dominate them. Chicken berry Britannia biryani, salli boti and charred kebabs add sweetness, smoke and texture, making the menu most rewarding when several people share.

The large, handsome dining room suits visitors, celebrations and groups who value atmosphere as much as a quiet conversation. It can be busy and noisy at peak times, so an early meal is sensible if queues or a crowded room would spoil the occasion. The menu spans breakfast through dinner, which also makes Dishoom one of the most flexible choices here. Daal, one grill, one rice dish and something fresh will usually give a better view of the kitchen than a table packed with similar rich plates.

Momos and Himalayan dishes served at Solti in Edinburgh

Solti

Solti is a compact Old Town restaurant with a distinctly Himalayan centre of gravity. Its handmade momo are the obvious starting point, but the menu is broad enough to build contrasting meals around them. Tandoori salmon brings char and richness, slow-cooked curries offer depth, and a Naga-spiced dish is there for diners who actively want sharper heat.

Drummond Street places Solti close to the university, the Festival Theatre and the edge of the Old Town, making it useful before a performance as well as for a destination dinner. The dining room is intimate, so booking is wise when timing matters. Couples can compare a momo plate and two different mains; groups should use the menu's Nepalese and Indian sections to avoid duplicating flavours. Solti particularly suits diners who want careful, modern presentation but still expect generosity and recognisable regional character. Ask for guidance on chilli levels, since the most assertive curries are best chosen deliberately.

A colourful mixed pakora platter at The Pakora Bar

The Pakora Bar

The Pakora Bar makes a compelling case for building dinner around Punjabi snacks. Vegetable and chicken pakora are the foundation, while haggis, black pudding and sea bass variations give the format an Edinburgh accent without losing sight of crisp batter, spice and chutney. Chaat adds sweet, sour and fresh notes between fried plates. Curries and grills, including butter chicken and robust Punjabi preparations, can turn those snacks into a fuller meal.

Its Holyrood Road home works well after the Royal Mile, the Scottish Parliament or a walk near Arthur's Seat. The atmosphere is informal and social, well matched to friends who prefer passing plates around to ordering separate courses. Start with a mixed selection and one chaat, then decide whether the table needs curry, rice or bread; this keeps the fried food lively rather than overwhelming. It is also a useful recommendation for mixed appetites because diners can take one piece, try a bolder ingredient and return to a familiar favourite. Confirm seafood availability if that is the main attraction.

Indian curries, rice and breads at Chaskaa in Edinburgh

Chaskaa Indian Restaurant Edinburgh

Chaskaa brings regional detail and a playful Scottish thread to a polished Leven Street menu. Amritsari fish and aloo tikki chaat make bright, textured starters, while lamb haggis pakora folds a local ingredient into a recognisably Indian snack. The main courses become more ambitious: monkfish curry offers a seafood-led route, lamb shank shakuti delivers slower spice and richness, and biryani provides a fragrant centrepiece for sharing. The choices reward diners who move beyond a default sauce and let the kitchen show several different regional ideas.

The restaurant sits between Tollcross and Bruntsfield, a convenient position for theatre, cinema and an evening in the south-west of the centre. Its contemporary room and attentive style make it a sound choice for a date or small celebration without becoming overly formal. A well-shaped order might combine one street-food starter, one seafood or tandoor dish and one slow-cooked curry, with rice chosen according to the sauces.

Address: 30-32 Leven Street, Edinburgh EH3 9LJ

An overhead spread of curries and naan at The Prahna

The Prahna Indian Grill Edinburgh

Prahna is the west-Edinburgh choice for contemporary Indian cooking built around charcoal and Scottish produce. The grill is central: tandoor heat can give chicken, lamb or fish a smoky edge while leaving room for the ingredient itself. Seafood and game widen the menu beyond standard curry-house patterns, and biryani offers a more aromatic, complete main when sharing is not the plan. Presentation is refined, yet the useful contrast is between clean grilled flavours and the deeper sauces, so avoid ordering every dish from only one side of the kitchen.

Located on St John's Road in Corstorphine, Prahna is more convenient for the west of the city and airport corridor than for a spontaneous Old Town meal. The stylish room and measured service make it particularly suitable for birthdays, anniversaries and dinners where the setting should feel considered. Ask the team which seasonal Scottish ingredients are currently strongest, then use breads, rice and vegetable dishes to support that choice.

Address: 295A St John's Road, Corstorphine, Edinburgh EH12 7XF

A selection of handmade momo and starters at The Khukuri

The Khukuri Nepalese Restaurant

The Khukuri is a long-running Nepalese restaurant where handmade momo, mountain curries and tandoor dishes form a clear, approachable menu. A plate of momo makes sense for almost every table, giving a gentle steamed or fried starting point before the stronger spices arrive. Thali is especially useful for a first visit because it presents several flavours and textures together, while the curry section lets returning diners concentrate on one meat, vegetable or sauce. Vegan and gluten-free choices are signposted, though individual allergy needs should still be discussed directly.

The West Maitland Street location sits between Haymarket station and the West End, convenient for travellers and for dinner before events around the EICC. The room has the relaxed feel of a neighbourhood restaurant rather than a high-concept destination, which suits families, couples and small groups who want guidance without ceremony. Dumplings, one tandoor plate and one curry will show more range than three similar sauces.

Address: 8 West Maitland Street, Edinburgh EH12 5DS

Curries, rice and flatbreads arranged at Gautam's in Edinburgh

Gautam's

Gautam's is a family-run Meadowbank restaurant that brings Indian and Nepalese dishes together in a comfortable, contemporary setting. The menu can support both a familiar curry-house order and a more exploratory meal: momo introduce the Nepalese side, tandoori dishes supply char, and the curry list ranges from gentle, creamy sauces to more aromatic or chilli-led combinations. Choose across those styles rather than ordering several near-identical mains.

Dalziel Place is just off London Road, well placed for Meadowbank, Abbeyhill and the eastern edge of the city centre. Gautam's feels polished enough for an occasion while remaining easy for a family dinner, and the broad menu helps when a group contains both adventurous and conservative diners. Ask for a heat recommendation rather than assuming a familiar dish name will taste identical to another restaurant's version. Rice, bread and a fresh side can then be matched to the sauces. Choose Gautam's when hospitality, menu breadth and an unhurried neighbourhood atmosphere matter as much as novelty.

Address: 13-14 Dalziel Place, Edinburgh EH7 5TP

Indian sharing dishes at Mother India's Cafe in Edinburgh

Mother India's Cafe Old Town

Mother India's Cafe is the strongest choice for diners who want Indian food in a tapas-style rhythm. Smaller portions make it possible to compare masala or chilli chicken, spicy keema dosa, lamb chops and prawns Malabari without committing the table to two enormous mains. Spiced haddock, daals and vegetable dishes keep a shared order from becoming too meat-heavy. The format is more than a novelty: it encourages contrast between crisp, grilled, saucy and fresh plates, and it lets two people explore almost as widely as a much larger group.

The Infirmary Street restaurant is close to the National Museum, university buildings and the Festival Theatre, with a lively room that suits lunch, pre-theatre dining and informal celebrations. The menu works best when dishes arrive in waves, so resist ordering too much at once and add a second round if needed. Include at least one vegetable plate or daal to soften the salt, chilli and char of the richer choices.

Address: 3-5 Infirmary Street, Edinburgh EH1 1LT

A carefully plated Indian dish at Haldi Newington

Haldi Newington

Haldi is a boutique Indian restaurant in Newington with a modern, presentation-conscious style. Seasonal ingredients and composed plates give the menu a different pace from a busy sharing café, while a tasting option can remove the need to negotiate across a long list. The most interesting choices are those that show the kitchen's balance of spice, texture and careful plating rather than the safest familiar curry. If ordering à la carte, combine one precise starter with a main from a different cooking method and ask which vegetables or breads best complete it.

Mayfield Gardens places Haldi south of the centre, close to the university's King's Buildings and convenient for Newington, Blackford and Marchmont. The intimate room works well for a date, a small celebration or diners who prefer attentive pacing to a loud group atmosphere. A tasting menu is most rewarding when everyone has time for the sequence; an à la carte visit is better before another engagement. Confirm dietary requirements when booking, particularly if choosing the set format.

Address: 38 Mayfield Gardens, Edinburgh EH9 2BY

Final Thoughts

Edinburgh's strongest Indian and South Asian restaurants divide naturally by mood. Gurkha Bar, Solti, The Khukuri and Gautam's are the most direct routes into Nepalese cooking, with momo, warming curries and tandoor dishes offering several levels of familiarity. Dishoom is the large, animated all-day destination; The Pakora Bar and Mother India's Cafe are the best choices for a table that enjoys sharing many smaller plates. Chaskaa adds inventive regional combinations, while Prahna and Haldi suit evenings when presentation, pacing and a more polished room are part of the plan.

Check each live menu before travelling, then order for contrast rather than quantity. One grilled dish, one sauce-led plate, something fresh and the right rice or bread will usually reveal more than a crowded table of similar curries. Nepalese dumplings, Punjabi snacks, Bombay café favourites and contemporary Scottish-Indian cooking suit different appetites and occasions. Match the address and atmosphere to the experience you want, reserve smaller rooms at busy times, and let regional strengths guide the meal.
