Edinburgh’s Old Town compresses an extraordinary amount of eating into its closes, bridges and steep lanes. The Royal Mile supplies the historic backdrop, but the best choice depends on looking beyond the most obvious frontage. Around Bank Street, Blackfriars Street, the Canongate and the Grassmarket, you can move from a modern Scottish tasting menu to an Indian sharing feast, a Spanish wine bar or a restorative bowl of mash within a short walk. That variety makes the area useful throughout the day, from an early brunch before sightseeing to a long dinner after the crowds thin.
Old Town and the Canongate answer very different dining needs. Makars and Amber make Scottish flavours approachable, while Wedgwood turns local and foraged produce into a more elaborate occasion. Edinburgh Larder and Hula are strongest earlier in the day. PIGGS, Mother India’s Cafe and Salt Horse are built for sharing or grazing, Vittoria offers a broad Italian menu for groups, and David Bann gives vegetarian cooking the attention it deserves.
Menus here move with seasons, supply and the rhythm of the city, so treat named dishes as examples of each kitchen’s character and check current details before visiting. Smaller dining rooms benefit from advance booking, especially during festival weeks and weekends. For casual venues, arriving outside the main lunch or dinner rush can be just as valuable. Old Town and the Canongate cover many styles, budgets and atmospheres within a short walk.

Makars Gourmet Mash Bar
Makars takes a familiar Scottish comfort-food combination and gives diners enough choice to make it a destination rather than a novelty. Slow-cooked meats, house haggis and plant-based dishes arrive with mash selected separately, so the same main can become smoky, mustardy or rich with black pudding. The Bank Street rooms sit just below the Lawnmarket and suit a warming lunch, an unfussy dinner or a first introduction to traditional flavours. It is popular with visitors, but the appeal rests on generous, direct cooking rather than the postcode alone.
The current menu points towards beef shoulder, lamb shank and haggis with neeps, alongside lion’s mane mushroom grown by the restaurant’s own Edinburgh project. Handmade Scotch eggs make a useful starter, while the range of mash is the feature to explore rather than an afterthought. Choose a sharper or herb-led mash beside a rich meat dish, and a creamier version with mushroom or vegetables. Portions are substantial, and tables can feel close together, so this works best when conviviality and comfort matter more than a hushed evening.

Edinburgh Larder Cafe
Edinburgh Larder is a morning and lunch specialist. Its narrow Blackfriars Street cafe has championed seasonal, local produce since 2009, and that sourcing gives familiar brunch food more identity than a generic all-day breakfast. The room is compact and often busy, but it feels rooted in the neighbourhood despite being close to the Royal Mile. Come for a proper sit-down breakfast, coffee and something lighter before an afternoon walk, or a late lunch when Scottish ingredients matter more than formal service.
A full Scottish brings together bacon, sausage, black pudding, haggis, potato scone, eggs and homemade beans, with vegetarian and vegan versions treated as complete breakfasts in their own right. The seasonal hash is a more focused alternative, combining crisp potatoes with smoked fish, pickles and a poached egg when available. Mushrooms on toast with Scottish crowdie show the kitchen at its simplest. Portions are filling, queues are possible and the menu finishes in the afternoon, so this is one to plan earlier rather than keep as a fallback dinner.
Address: 15 Blackfriars Street, Edinburgh EH1 1NB

Mother India’s Cafe Old Town
Mother India’s Cafe makes most sense when everyone is willing to share. Its Indian tapas format replaces the usual one-curry-per-person routine with smaller dishes that arrive together, giving a table room to compare crisp, grilled, creamy and chilli-led flavours. The two-level Infirmary Street restaurant is lively rather than intimate and suits friends, families and diners who would rather explore than commit to a single main. Ordering in stages helps: the official menu itself suggests beginning with several plates between two and adding more only if needed.
Kurkure aloo, pakoras and masala dosa provide crunch and spice before richer dishes such as railway lamb, prawns in Malabari curry or paneer in a deeper sauce. Fish pakora and spiced haddock are especially useful contrasts to a vegetable or lentil plate, while rice and naan should be treated as part of the shared plan. Current reviews still favour the food and brisk service, though the room can feel busy at peak times. Book ahead, then ask for guidance on balance rather than ordering four similar curries.

PIGGS
PIGGS brings the warmth of a Spanish wine bar to the quieter Canongate end of the Royal Mile. The family-run room is small, relaxed and animated, with tapas designed to arrive as the kitchen finishes them. That pace suits a date or a table of friends far better than anyone needing a rigid three-course structure. The wine list is part of the experience, and staff knowledge helps when matching a bottle or glass to a wide spread of salty, smoky and richer plates.
Patatas bravas are the obvious foundation, but the meal becomes more interesting with Spanish cheese, cured meat, prawns, croquetas and chorizo in sauce. Current reviews repeatedly praise the food’s freshness and the team’s enthusiasm, while also confirming that the compact room fills quickly. Three or four dishes for two is a sensible starting point, with bread ready for sauces and a second round only if appetite allows. Reserve if timing matters, and make sure you choose the Royal Mile menu because the Bruntsfield branch has its own offering.

Wedgwood The Restaurant
Wedgwood is a clear choice for a composed special occasion. Paul and Lisa Wedgwood describe the aim as fine dining without pretension, and the small Canongate room supports that balance: polished enough for a celebration, yet relaxed enough to keep attention on the food. Scottish produce and foraged herbs shape both à la carte and tasting menus, which change by season and can adjust daily. Lunch offers the gentlest introduction, while the evening tasting menu gives the kitchen space to connect several parts of Scotland.
The summer menu shows that range in dishes such as Isle of Skye scallops with sweetcorn, sea aster and bottarga; roe deer with venison haggis, neeps and sweet potato; and torched halibut with mussels and kelp crumble. A vegetarian route is planned as a full experience, not a shortened substitute, with potato pave, chanterelles and charred cauliflower appearing in distinct courses. Everyone at a table must choose the same à la carte or tasting format, so agree beforehand and mention allergies when booking.

Hula Juice Bar and Eatery
Hula is the bright counterpoint to the Old Town’s heavier pub and comfort-food menus. The Grassmarket branch specialises in colourful breakfast and lunch dishes, smoothies and good coffee, with a cheerful room that works for solo diners as well as small groups. It is particularly useful before a day of walking, when a fresh bowl or substantial toast feels more appealing than a fry-up. The West Bow address puts it close to Victoria Street and the Grassmarket, making it an easy pause between Old Town sights.
Açai bowls, porridge and avocado toast lead naturally into salads and brunch plates with eggs or smoked salmon. Recent diners praise the fresh ingredients and generous presentation, although service can slow when the room is full and a few reports question whether every dish matches its menu wording precisely. Choose it for balance, colour and dietary flexibility, then check the current board for the exact combination. It opens early and attracts queues, so breakfast before the central rush is often the most comfortable way to visit.

Vittoria On The Bridge
Vittoria On The Bridge is valuable when a group needs broad Italian choice, a central meeting point and a lively dining room. The Crolla family restaurant serves throughout the day near the National Library, making it convenient for a pre-theatre meal, a family lunch or dinner after exploring the Old Town. The menu covers antipasti, pizza, pasta, fish and meat, so it can absorb competing appetites more easily than the smaller specialist restaurants. The mood is animated, especially on weekends, and booking prevents an unnecessary wait.
Burrata with tomatoes is a clean way to begin before seafood linguine, risotto, sea bass or one of the pizzas. Recent reports praise fresh prawns, pasta and attentive handling of dietary requests, but they also record occasional inconsistency in carbonara and gluten-free pasta. Choose dishes closest to the kitchen’s core Italian strengths, and speak up promptly if the cooking is off. It remains a dependable social choice rather than a quiet dining room, with the widest appeal coming from flexibility and hospitality.

David Bann
David Bann remains one of the Old Town’s most substantial answers to vegetarian dining. The all-day restaurant treats meat-free food as a complete international menu, moving between Scottish ingredients, Asian flavours and European technique without forcing everything into one house style. Its calm St Mary’s Street room suits mixed groups, dates and occasions when vegetarian or vegan diners should have real choice. A set lunch provides the most accessible route, while the à la carte menu is better for exploring the kitchen’s more elaborate combinations.
Spicy aubergine koftas with cashew and aduki bean, mushroom risotto, double-baked smoked-cheese pudding and the restaurant’s applewood-smoked tofu show the menu’s range. Desserts are unusually considered, including a vegan sharing assortment and house ice creams or sorbets. Current feedback is divided: many diners praise layered flavours and inventive combinations, while others report bland or reheated dishes. That inconsistency is worth acknowledging. Order the more distinctive signatures, allow time for the meal and raise any temperature issue promptly instead of letting it define the evening.
Address: 56–58 St Mary’s Street, Edinburgh EH1 1SX

Whisky Selection
Kilkerran 12
A lovely dram which is slightly peaty with citrus notes. A smoky finish with hints of sweetness and butterscotch; best paired with our sticky toffee pudding.
Ardnamurchan AD
From a new distillery in the Western Highlands this whisky is 50% peated and 50% unpeated, with a smoky and peppery palate.
Kilchoman Machir Bay
An Islay single malt which is heavily peated and aged in both sherry and bourbon casks.
NC'Nean Organic
From a new and experimental distillery this organic single malt is on the sweeter side with a fruity palate of lemon curd, poached pears and juicy apricots.
Bunnahabhain 12
A famous unpeated Islay whisky, matured in sherry and bourbon casks, this dram is rich, spicy and smooth.
GlenAllachie 12
Crowned the world’s best single malt whisky in 2025, this Speyside whisky is a better alternative to the more well-known Glenmorangie and Glenfiddich also from the same region. This whisky is full-bodied with dark flavours of roasted coffee, stewed apples and cocoa powder.

Amber Restaurant At The Scotch Whisky Experience
Amber is the most convenient refined Scottish stop at the castle end of the Royal Mile. The restaurant sits inside the Scotch Whisky Experience but operates as a destination in its own right, pairing accessible regional cooking with a remarkable range of whisky. Stone walls and a warm dining room make it suitable for lunch after the castle, a tasting-led evening or visitors who want guidance rather than a daunting list. You do not need to turn the meal into a whisky lesson, though staff can make pairings useful.
The current spring menu moves through Scottish cheese, seafood, meat and vegetables, with smaller plates and full mains allowing different levels of commitment. A seafood platter or a fish dish best connects the kitchen to Scotland’s coast, while a cheese plate with Amber chutney makes an effective partner for a final dram. Vegan options are marked rather than improvised. The setting inevitably attracts tourists, but detailed recent reviews praise both food and welcome. Choose Amber for location, thoughtful pairing and a calmer pause near Castlehill.

Salt Horse Beer Shop, Bar and Kitchen
Salt Horse keeps its promise deliberately narrow: burgers, wings, hand-cut chips and an excellent craft-beer selection. The Blackfriars Street bar is relaxed and adult-only, with a small beer garden and a bottle shop that strengthens its appeal to drinkers who want more than a standard pub tap list. Half the seating is usually held for walk-ins, so it can rescue an unplanned evening, although booking is wiser for a group. The food is built to match the beer rather than compete with an overextended menu.
Dry-aged beef burgers bring crisp edges and a juicy centre, while fried-chicken sandwiches and wings cover the crunchier side of the menu. Vegan versions receive the same attention through smoked cheese, bacon-style jam and house ranch rather than settling for a plain substitute. Add twice-cooked chips, then ask what on tap will cut through the richness. This is a casual, indulgent choice rather than a family stop or quiet date, and the compact menu means everyone should be happy with burgers before taking a table.

Final Thoughts
Old Town and the Canongate reward choosing by occasion. Makars is the strongest all-purpose Scottish comfort-food stop, while Edinburgh Larder and Hula cover two very different breakfasts. Mother India’s Cafe and PIGGS are the places to share widely; Salt Horse is best when burgers and beer are the whole plan. Vittoria handles a mixed group with ease, David Bann gives vegetarian cooking proper breadth, and Amber turns a Castlehill visit into a more thoughtful meal.
For a longer evening, Wedgwood offers the most complete sense of occasion and the clearest connection between seasonal Scottish produce and modern technique. Wherever you choose, check the live menu for current dishes and prices, reserve the smallest rooms and leave enough time for the Old Town’s steep streets. The area’s most memorable meals often sit only a close or stairway away from the busiest route, so a little planning produces a much better experience than settling for the nearest board on the Royal Mile.
