Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and the Old Kent Road cover a broad stretch of south-east London where river history, railway arches and long residential streets shape the way people eat. Around Bermondsey Street and the arches near London Bridge, small restaurants favour counter dining and ambitious sharing plates. Rotherhithe contributes waterside pubs and neighbourhood kitchens, while Tower Bridge Road and the roads towards Elephant and Castle remain strong for inexpensive specialists and established family restaurants.
The ten places below range from Portuguese small plates and creative Latin American cooking to Japanese ramen, Indian grills, British pub food and sustainably sourced fish and chips. Some are destinations, but others succeed because they understand a specific local need: an early breakfast near London South Bank University, a bowl of noodles after work, or a Sunday meal beside the Thames. Together they show how much variety sits between SE1 and SE16.
Check the practical details before travelling. Several restaurants close on Mondays, many divide lunch and dinner service, and The Mayflower’s outdoor jetty is generally kept for walk-ins even when indoor tables can be booked. Menus change with season and supply, so check current dishes and prices and confirm allergies directly. Tokoton Ramen is at 25 Bartholomew Street, a short walk from the main Old Kent Road corridor.

The Mayflower
The Mayflower combines a historic Rotherhithe pub with one of the area’s most atmospheric dining settings. Its timbered rooms, open fire and deck over the Thames give the visit a strong sense of place, yet the kitchen is more than scenery. Fresh, seasonal British dishes support the pub’s traditional ales, and the upstairs restaurant works for a planned meal while the bar and riverside jetty suit a spontaneous pint and plate.
Freshly battered haddock with chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce is the obvious first choice. House-made pies, slow-braised lamb shoulder and sausages with mash keep the menu rooted in pub cooking, while scallops, mussels and pan-fried sea bass broaden the seafood. A cauliflower and chickpea coconut curry gives vegans a proper main. Sunday service brings roasts and can be busy, so reserve the dining room for a group; visit around sunset if the river view matters and be prepared to wait for an outdoor table.

Bar Douro London Bridge
Bar Douro channels Portuguese food and wine through a tiled railway arch at Flat Iron Square. Counter seats face the open kitchen, making the preparation part of the evening, while a terrace provides a looser warm-weather option. The menu follows a small-plate format but remains grounded in recognisable regional dishes rather than treating sharing as an excuse for tiny portions. It suits a pair especially well, since two diners can cover snacks, vegetables, seafood and meat without over-ordering.
Start with smoked alheira sausage croquettes or salt-cod fritters, then add bacalhau à Brás, the soft, savoury hash of salt cod, potato and egg. Garlic prawns, octopus salad and punched potatoes bring contrasting textures. On the richer side, grilled flat iron steak with mustard sauce and acorn-fed black pig make good centrepieces. Finish with a pastel de nata and cinnamon ice cream. Ask for Portuguese wine guidance, order in two waves and leave room on the counter so each hot plate can be eaten promptly.

Paladar
Paladar serves contemporary Latin American food in a dedicated gluten-free kitchen near St George’s Circus. Its dishes draw on ingredients and techniques from across Central and South America, and the wine list stays within the same geography. A covered garden adds a calm space behind the London Road frontage, while the art displayed throughout the restaurant gives it an identity beyond dinner. It is particularly useful for groups managing coeliac requirements without reducing everyone else’s choice.
Plantain crisps with guacamole and tapioca cheese croquettes with guava sauce make a lively opening. Tuna tostadas, salmon tiradito and grilled prawns bring acid and heat to the seafood, while cochinita pibil or Uruguayan rump steak supplies deeper savoury weight. Roasted aubergine with Maya hummus and black-bean sauce is a substantial plant-based option. Purple-corn churros with coffee dulce de leche finish the meal clearly. A tasting menu gives the kitchen control of the sequence; otherwise share widely and flag severe allergies when booking.

Co-owner Nicolas Modad brings experience from Patagonia and a long period in the Brindisa kitchen, while Federico Fugazza connects the restaurant to Porteña’s Argentine street-food tradition. The result feels focused and convivial rather than corporate. It is a strong choice for steak, but sharing plates and vegetables mean a table does not need to order several near-identical cuts.
Empanadas, provoleta and chorizo make natural starters, followed by a cut of beef selected for the balance of tenderness and flavour you prefer. Ribeye brings richer marbling, sirloin is firmer and cleaner, and sharing cuts suit a larger table. Chimichurri supplies the expected herb and vinegar lift; grilled vegetables, salad or potatoes keep the meal in proportion. Ask staff to explain weights and doneness before ordering, since the largest cut is rarely necessary. Lunch operates on selected days, while evening reservations are the safest plan.

Tower Tandoori Restaurant
Tower Tandoori has served Tower Bridge Road since 1978 and remains one of the area’s most dependable Indian dining rooms. The menu joins Anglo-Indian favourites with regional dishes and modern grill preparations, marking allergens and dietary categories more clearly than many traditional curry houses. Its spacious setting and broad choice make it suitable for families and mixed groups, while the long local history gives the restaurant a character that newer delivery-led kitchens cannot reproduce.
Smoky lamb chops, tandoori king prawns and a trio of chicken tikka show the charcoal oven at its best. Paneer tikka and onion-and-kale bhajia give vegetarians distinctive starters. Continue with a regional lamb or chicken curry, a biryani, or seafood before choosing rice and bread to match the sauces. Ordering one dry grilled dish alongside two contrasting curries usually creates a better table than selecting only creamy preparations. Ask about heat levels, use the allergen markings as a starting point and confirm cross-contact directly when dietary risk is serious.

Bone Daddies Bermondsey
Bone Daddies Bermondsey sits among railway arches and breweries close to the Bermondsey Beer Mile. The group makes its long-cooked ramen broths here, and the branch doubles as a working base for recipe development, giving it a stronger connection to the food than a standard outpost. High stools, loud music and quick service create an informal mood suited to lunch, a pre-pub bowl or a lively meal with friends rather than a quiet celebration.
The namesake tonkotsu is the most direct introduction, while Pork Pork Chilli layers charred belly, minced pork and chilli oil for greater intensity. T22 offers a chicken-led alternative and monthly bowls create a reason to return. Korean fried wings, pig-bone ribs and bao are easy to share, but too many rich sides can flatten the broth. Taste first, add chilli gradually and order extra noodles for a larger appetite. The branch now opens early enough for the group’s breakfast ramen, a playful full-English variation rather than a traditional Japanese bowl.

Tokoton Ramen
Tokoton Ramen is a compact independent run by three Japanese owners who describe their approach through the word tokoton: doing something thoroughly. The restaurant’s concise menu covers ramen, donburi and familiar sides, with more than half of the choices available as vegan dishes. That balance makes it one of the easiest noodle shops for a mixed table, and the relaxed room suits a weekday lunch or unfussy dinner away from the busier London Bridge streets.
Classic shoyu ramen combines chicken-and-pork broth with chashu, vegetables, nori and a soy-marinated egg. Miso brings extra depth, while the vegan creamy miso and black-garlic kuromayu bowls have their own plant-based broth rather than relying on omissions. Chicken or cauliflower karaage adds crunch; pork and vegan gyoza are reliable starters. Donburi topped with chashu, teriyaki tofu or dengaku aubergine offers a broth-free alternative. Order one bowl per person, share a side and try sake or Japanese beer if the visit is not rushed.

The Royal Oak Borough
The Royal Oak is a proper neighbourhood pub owned by the Sussex brewer Harvey’s, known for well-kept cask ale and a dining room that avoids turning the building into a theme. Food follows a seasonal British pattern and is served on a more limited schedule than the bar, rewarding diners who check before setting out. It is a natural place for a pie, roast or simple plate accompanied by beer rather than cocktails and elaborate service.
The exact menu changes, but pies, sausages with mash, pork dishes and seasonal fish capture the kitchen’s strengths. At Sunday lunch, roasted meats and crisp potatoes are the natural focus; during the week, a smaller plate or pub classic can make a satisfying stop near Borough. Ask which dishes are made that day and choose a Harvey’s ale to match, since the pub’s cellar is central to its appeal. Booking helps at popular meal times, and diners should distinguish the food hours from the longer bar opening hours.

Joseph's Fish & Chips – Tower Bridge
Joseph’s treats fish and chips as a fresh seafood meal rather than a frozen convenience product. The Tower Bridge Road shop says its fish is never frozen and emphasises local, sustainable sourcing, while a small seating area allows visitors to eat the batter at its crispest. The offer is narrow by design, and its appeal comes from doing that familiar format carefully. It works for takeaway, a quick lunch or a casual sit-down meal.
Cod and haddock are the key decisions, with the day’s catch and availability signposted by the restaurant. Add chips, mushy peas, curry sauce or a pickled side according to taste, but avoid crowding the order before assessing the portion. The branch sometimes runs midweek fish-and-chip offers and names the current source of its fish, useful details that are best checked on the day. Eat in when possible, open takeaway packaging promptly to release steam, and tell staff about allergies because the shared fryer and batter handling matter.

Art Cafe London
Art Cafe London is a useful independent daytime restaurant opposite London South Bank University. It opens early, closes before dinner and serves the kind of broad café menu that supports students, commuters and local workers: cooked breakfasts, eggs, sandwiches, panini, salads, hot plates, juices and coffee. Its broad menu and early opening make it a dependable option for an everyday breakfast or lunch.
Poached eggs and avocado on toast make a lighter breakfast, while the Vegan Heaven combines avocado, mushrooms, beans, vegan sausage, hash brown and grilled tomatoes for a full plate. Bacon-and-egg rolls, Mediterranean-style hot food and filled panini suit a faster visit. Fresh juices and cakes provide the easiest afternoon order. Ask what has just been prepared rather than defaulting to the largest breakfast, and remember that Sunday is normally closed. This is a practical local choice, with value and hospitality carrying more weight than restaurant theatre.

Final Thoughts
This part of south-east London rewards diners who look beyond a single high street. The Mayflower offers the strongest setting and classic British meal beside the Thames, while Bar Douro and Paladar deliver the most polished sharing menus. Chimichurris is the destination for charcoal-grilled beef, Tower Tandoori supplies an established curry-house experience, and Joseph’s shows how satisfying a narrow fish-and-chip menu can be.
For noodles, Bone Daddies brings energy and rich broth to the arches, while Tokoton offers a quieter independent approach with unusually strong vegan choices. The Royal Oak remains valuable for seasonal pub food and cask ale, and Art Cafe covers breakfast and lunch with warmth and speed. Check opening times, decide whether atmosphere or a particular dish matters most, and use the live menus to plan the order. The neighbourhoods can then carry a day from early coffee to riverside supper without repeating a style of cooking.
