Best Restaurants Near Me In Islington

Islington has one of London’s most rewarding neighbourhood restaurant scenes. The borough stretches from the busy streets surrounding Angel and Clerkenwell to the quieter residential areas of Canonbury, Highbury and Finsbury Park. Its dining rooms reflect that variety, bringing together influential British institutions, polished Italian cooking, modern Thai food, ambitious pubs and relaxed restaurants built around seasonal ingredients.

The area is particularly strong at combining serious cooking with an approachable atmosphere. St. John and Luca offer internationally recognised dining close to Clerkenwell, while Trullo has become an essential Highbury neighbourhood restaurant. Establishments such as The Baring and The Pig & Butcher demonstrate how successfully the traditional London pub can accommodate creative and carefully sourced food.

There are appealing choices for many different occasions. A meal might involve handmade pasta beside an open grill, colourful Mediterranean plates on Upper Street, powerful Thai curries or an excellent cheeseburger with a pint. The restaurants below capture the quality, personality and variety that make Islington such an enjoyable part of London in which to eat.

St. John

St. John is one of the most influential British restaurants of the modern era. Founded by Fergus Henderson and Trevor Gulliver in a former Smithfield smokehouse, it helped renew interest in nose to tail cooking and the intelligent use of overlooked ingredients. Roast bone marrow with parsley salad remains its defining dish, but the frequently changing menu rewards exploration beyond the familiar signatures. Offal, seafood, game and seasonal vegetables are prepared with confidence and little unnecessary decoration, allowing their flavours and textures to remain clear. Traditional puddings, freshly baked madeleines and Eccles cake with Lancashire cheese continue the same distinctly British approach. The whitewashed dining room is functional rather than luxurious, while knowledgeable service and a convivial atmosphere keep its Michelin starred cooking approachable. St. John remains relevant because its simplicity is supported by exceptional judgment and consistency.

Luca Clerkenwell

Luca Clerkenwell interprets Italian cuisine through outstanding seasonal ingredients sourced from Britain. Handmade pasta provides one of the kitchen’s greatest strengths, appearing with carefully balanced fillings, deeply flavoured ragù and sauces that demonstrate control rather than excess. The broader menu moves confidently through seafood, vegetables and meat cooked over fire, while popular parmesan fries bring a playful note to the experience. Luca’s Michelin starred cooking is polished, but the restaurant avoids the rigid structure of a formal tasting room. Diners can choose a complete meal in the main restaurant or visit the bar for a more flexible selection of dishes. Warm colours, exposed brick, an open kitchen and a sheltered terrace give the building considerable character. Accomplished food, attentive service and one of Clerkenwell’s most attractive interiors make Luca equally appealing for a celebration or an unhurried lunch.

Address: 88 St John Street, Clerkenwell, London EC1M 4EH, United Kingdom

The Quality Chop House

The Quality Chop House combines historic surroundings with assured modern British cooking. The restaurant occupies a former working men’s dining room established in the nineteenth century, retaining its narrow wooden booths and distinctive tiled interior. Meat remains central to the experience, with carefully sourced chops and steaks cooked accurately and served with accompaniments that complement rather than distract from the principal ingredient. The celebrated confit potatoes are exceptionally crisp outside and richly layered within, while starters, seafood and vegetable dishes show that the kitchen’s abilities extend well beyond the grill. Desserts are handled with similar confidence, and the adjoining wine bar provides access to a thoughtful collection of bottles. The room can feel intimate and lively when full, giving a meal a genuine sense of occasion without introducing unnecessary formality. It is a compelling expression of British restaurant tradition renewed for contemporary London.

Address: 92–94 Farringdon Road, Clerkenwell, London EC1R 3EA, United Kingdom

Trullo

Trullo has become one of Islington’s most enduring neighbourhood restaurants by concentrating on generous Italian food and consistently strong ingredients. Handmade pasta changes with the seasons, although pappardelle with slow cooked beef shin ragù remains an especially popular expression of the kitchen’s style. Other preparations might combine filled pasta with butter and sage, fresh seafood with bright dressings or vegetables with excellent olive oil and carefully judged acidity. A charcoal grill brings smoke and caramelisation to fish and meat while preserving their natural character. The ground floor dining room is warm and comfortable, while the lower level provides a darker and more intimate setting beside the bar. Service is friendly and informed, and the Italian wine list includes plenty of bottles suited to the direct flavours of the food. Trullo feels relaxed, but the apparent simplicity of its cooking rests on considerable skill.

Ottolenghi Islington

Ottolenghi Islington celebrates vegetables, herbs and spices through colourful Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influenced cooking. During the day, the long counter is filled with abundant salads, savoury dishes, breads and cakes. Ingredients such as roasted aubergine, tahini, preserved lemon, chilli, yoghurt, nuts and fresh herbs are combined to create food with contrasting textures and layers of flavour. Customers can assemble a quick lunch from the counter or settle into the dining room for a more leisurely meal. In the evening, the space becomes an intimate neighbourhood restaurant serving a seasonal menu designed for sharing, supported by a selection of wines from smaller producers. The famous cakes and pastries make it difficult to leave without dessert. Ottolenghi’s considerable popularity has not diminished the distinctive approach that made this Upper Street restaurant an important part of Islington’s dining culture.

Farang

Farang serves expressive Thai cooking from an informal Highbury dining room. Chef Sebby Holmes combines a serious understanding of Thai flavours with ingredients selected for their quality and seasonality. Aromatic herbs, smoke, chilli, fermentation and fresh acidity are used in careful balance, creating dishes with intensity rather than uncontrolled heat. Prawn miang bites provide a vivid opening, while curries develop remarkable depth from spices, coconut, seafood or slowly cooked meat. Crisp fried chicken, fresh salads, grilled dishes and excellent roti make the menu particularly satisfying when shared. Feasting menus allow the kitchen to arrange these flavours into a balanced progression for the whole table. Farang’s Michelin Bib Gourmand reflects the quality and value of its cooking, but the restaurant remains relaxed and generous. It is an excellent destination for diners who want Thai food with personality, precision and considerable energy.

The Baring

The Baring is an ambitious Islington gastropub where a compact seasonal menu allows the kitchen to concentrate on detail and execution. The cooking draws from British and European traditions while using spices and ideas from further afield when they strengthen a dish. Preparations such as quail cooked over the grill, delicate pasta, carefully roasted pork and imaginative vegetable plates demonstrate a level of creativity beyond conventional pub food. Ingredients change frequently, so the menu reflects what producers can supply at its best rather than repeating the same selection throughout the year. The Sunday roast maintains the comforting appeal expected from a neighbourhood pub, supported by well made desserts, beer, wine and cocktails. Its stripped back dining room feels polished but remains welcoming to local drinkers. The Baring succeeds because its food is distinctive without sacrificing the relaxed social character of a good pub.

The Pig & Butcher

The Pig & Butcher is a welcoming Islington gastropub with a particular commitment to carefully sourced and butchered meat. Its kitchen works with whole animals and changes the menu according to the cuts available, resulting in dishes that might include grilled steaks, slow cooked pork, sharing roasts and a richly flavoured black pudding Scotch egg. This approach allows the restaurant to make thoughtful use of different cuts while maintaining close control over preparation. Seafood and seasonal vegetable options add breadth for diners who do not want meat to dominate the meal. Sunday lunch is especially popular, combining well cooked roasts with crisp potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and generous gravy. The wooden tables and busy bar preserve the atmosphere of a proper neighbourhood pub, while attentive service and a carefully chosen drinks list make it suitable for a more substantial celebration.

Trattoria Brutto

Trattoria Brutto recreates the convivial spirit of a Florentine neighbourhood restaurant in Clerkenwell. Its menu favours recognisable regional dishes over elaborate presentation, with fresh pasta, chicken liver, grilled meat and comforting desserts served in generous forms. Penne with tomato and vodka has become a popular order, while preparations featuring rabbit, butter, sage or deeply savoury meat sauces reflect the restaurant’s rustic Tuscan character. The food is supported by inexpensive Negronis and a wine list designed for relaxed drinking rather than ceremony. Candlelight, closely arranged tables and music give the room a lively atmosphere that becomes increasingly animated as the evening progresses. Brutto’s Michelin Bib Gourmand recognises the combination of quality and value, although the restaurant’s strongest attraction is its personality. It is a place for shared plates, conversation and a meal allowed to develop without excessive formality.

Address: 35–37 Greenhill Rents, Clerkenwell, London EC1M 6BN, United Kingdom

The Plimsoll

The Plimsoll is a lively Finsbury Park pub known for direct cooking, an energetic atmosphere and one of north London’s most sought after cheeseburgers. The Dexter cheeseburger combines deeply flavoured beef, melted cheese, onions and sauce in proportions that allow every element to remain distinct. Although the burger attracts much of the attention, the frequently changing menu offers plenty of reasons to explore further. Seafood, fresh vegetable dishes, excellent potatoes and uncomplicated desserts show a kitchen interested in flavour rather than a single signature. Diners can reserve a table in the compact dining room or find space around the bar and outdoor ledges for a more spontaneous visit. Beer, wine and cocktails are treated as an essential part of the experience. The Plimsoll feels unmistakably like a neighbourhood pub, but the care given to its food makes it a destination in its own right.

Final Thoughts

Islington’s finest restaurants demonstrate that excellent cooking does not require a single style of dining. St. John and Luca provide internationally recognised experiences near Clerkenwell, while Trullo, Farang and Ottolenghi offer distinctive neighbourhood cooking built around Italian, Thai, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern traditions. The Quality Chop House connects the area’s history with a confident modern approach to British ingredients.

The borough is equally rewarding when the occasion calls for something less formal. The Baring, The Pig & Butcher and The Plimsoll serve ambitious food while preserving the warmth and sociability of a London pub, while Trattoria Brutto provides a lively setting for pasta, wine and conversation. Together, these restaurants make Islington one of the capital’s most varied and dependable dining destinations.
