Mayfair rewards diners who look beyond the postcode’s polished surface. Within a few streets, you can eat regional Spanish food at a lively counter, settle into a serious steakhouse, explore Kyoto-influenced Japanese cooking or devote an evening to some of London’s most ambitious tasting menus. The area is built for occasions, yet its strongest restaurants distinguish themselves through character and consistency rather than ceremony alone.
Mayfair offers excellent choices with very different strengths. Some are made for a long, carefully paced celebration; others suit a generous lunch, pre-theatre dinner or sociable meal built around shared plates. Menus change with the seasons, so the dishes below are useful signposts rather than promises. Use the current menu to compare the latest dishes and prices before booking.
Mayfair dining can be expensive, and the right choice depends on what you value. Sabor and Ambassadors Clubhouse lead with bold flavour and conviviality, HIDE and Hawksmoor balance polish with broad appeal, while The Ritz and Hélène Darroze deliver full-scale luxury. UMU, Murano, Pavyllon and Ormer extend that range across Japanese, Italian, French and modern British cooking without losing sight of the food on the plate.

Sabor Mayfair
Sabor turns a Heddon Street townhouse into a spirited tour of Spain. The ground-floor counter concentrates on tapas and seafood, the bar encourages a quicker visit, and El Asador upstairs centres the meal on the wood-fired oven. That structure makes the restaurant unusually flexible: two people can order a focused sequence at the counter, while a group can build a celebratory lunch around dishes intended for sharing. The room is energetic, but the cooking is disciplined enough to keep the detail clear.
Look for confident contrasts rather than a single regional template. Grilled octopus, croquetas, shellfish and rice dishes show the kitchen’s feel for crisp edges, smoke and savoury depth, while the asador’s suckling pig is a signature for diners ready to commit to a larger centrepiece. Seasonal specials are part of the appeal, so ask what is best that day. Sabor is the strongest all-round recommendation here for flavour-led cooking that still feels relaxed and generous.

Hide Mayfair
HIDE’s sculptural staircase connects three distinct levels overlooking Green Park. Above is the most formal dining room, Ground serves polished all-day cooking, and Below houses the bar. That range is valuable in Mayfair: the restaurant can handle a composed tasting-menu evening, a business lunch or an elegant drink without making every visit feel identical. Service is attentive, and the wine programme draws on Hedonism Wines, giving curious drinkers remarkable breadth and unusually specific pairing help.
The food is modern, seasonal and built around precise sauces and carefully sourced produce. Recent menu ideas have included cured bream with Earl Grey dashi, charcoal-cooked lamb with smoked anchovy and wild garlic, and dry-aged duck paired with fruit and morels. Those combinations sound elaborate, yet the best plates retain a clear main flavour. Choose HIDE when your party wants fine-dining technique and a grand view but also appreciates having several formats and menu lengths to consider.

Hawksmoor – Air Street
Hawksmoor Air Street occupies an Art Deco room above Regent Street and gives the group’s steakhouse formula a stronger seafood accent. Dry-aged British beef remains the anchor, available as individual cuts or larger steaks to share, but Dover sole, monkfish, lobster and oysters give non-steak diners real choice. The scale of the dining room and confidence of the service make it particularly useful for mixed groups, work dinners and celebrations where a reliably upbeat atmosphere matters.
Begin with potted beef and bacon, scallops or oysters, then decide whether the table wants separate plates or a large cut carved for sharing. Chips, greens and rich sauces complete the classic steakhouse experience, while the seafood options can produce a lighter route through the menu. Cooking a substantial steak to the requested degree is the central test, and Air Street has a long record of handling that volume. It is a dependable choice for diners who want abundance, familiarity and a lively room.

Ambassadors Clubhouse
Ambassadors Clubhouse brings the exuberance of Punjabi hospitality to Heddon Street. The cooking is rooted in northern India and designed to move between snacks, grills, curries and breads, which makes ordering across the table the most rewarding approach. The restaurant has quickly established a distinctive identity, pairing club-like interiors and a busy soundtrack with food that carries enough spice, smoke and acidity to command attention. Chicken and lamb preparations are halal, a useful detail for many groups.
Build momentum with papads, beetroot raj kachori or duck chaat before moving to the grills. Mutton keema naan, tandoori lamb chops, wild prawns and salmon tikka show the kitchen’s range, while butter chicken chops and biryani bring comfort and richness. Balance heavier choices with sharper vegetables and chutneys rather than ordering every rich dish at once. This is an excellent destination for a sociable dinner where the table wants bold flavours, generous sharing and more energy than a hushed Mayfair dining room.
Address: 25 Heddon Street, London W1B 4BH

The Ritz Restaurant
The Ritz Restaurant is London ceremony at full volume: chandeliers, gilded detail, formal service and cooking that treats the dining room as part of the performance. Its two Michelin stars recognise a kitchen that combines classical French foundations with top British produce. Multi-course menus suit an unhurried celebration, and the Arts de la Table service brings carving, filleting and sauce work into the room. The experience feels deliberate from arrival, so allow time rather than squeezing it between other plans.
Current seasonal cooking may move through Orkney scallops, wild sea bass, pigeon and intricately finished desserts, with sauces providing much of the depth and continuity. The kitchen’s precision is matched by a serious cellar and polished guidance from the floor. Dress rules are part of the restaurant’s identity: the current policy asks gentlemen to wear a jacket and tie, so check it when booking. Choose The Ritz for landmark grandeur, traditional hospitality and a meal intended to feel unmistakably special.

Helene Darroze at The Connaught
Hélène Darroze at The Connaught is the most exacting dining experience here. The three-Michelin-starred restaurant builds its menus around exceptional produce and Darroze’s relationships with growers, fishers and farmers, then frames those ingredients with influences from south-west France and her wider travels. The redesigned room is luxurious without distracting from the plates. Expect a long, carefully paced sequence in which service, wine and small transitions carry as much weight as the headline courses.
The personalised menu format encourages diners to choose the ingredients and length that suit them. Seafood is a particular strength: recent examples have combined lobster or scallop with aromatic spice, while finely judged vegetable courses and the signature baba with Armagnac show that the meal is not simply a parade of luxury products. This is the right reservation for committed gastronomes who enjoy subtle flavour development and close attention from the room. Mention dietary needs well ahead of the visit so the kitchen can plan properly.

Umu Mayfair
Behind a discreet Bruton Place entrance, UMU presents Kyoto-influenced Japanese cooking with an unusually strong connection to British waters. The kitchen champions line-caught fish from Cornwall and elsewhere around the British Isles, handled with ikejime techniques to protect texture and flavour. Diners can choose the narrative arc of kaiseki, explore the à la carte menu or take a more focused lunch route. The intimate room suits a serious date, client meal or quiet celebration better than a noisy group gathering.
Sashimi and nigiri reveal the sourcing most directly, but the range is broader than sushi. Current menus include shellfish cured with sake, lobster tempura, charcoal-grilled fish, Welsh lamb with pine-nut miso and high-grade Japanese wagyu, alongside vegetable sushi and tofu dishes. At lunch, chirashi and bento make the kitchen more approachable without reducing the care on the plate. Ask for guidance if the sake list is unfamiliar; the staff can shape a pairing around the delicacy or richness of each course.

Murano Mayfair
Murano channels Angela Hartnett’s Italian heritage through seasonal British produce and measured fine-dining technique. The Queen Street room is calm and warm, and the menu lets diners choose their preferred number of courses rather than locking everyone into one extended tasting sequence. That flexibility is a major strength: a polished lunch can remain concise, while dinner can unfold through antipasti, pasta, fish or meat. The cooking is refined, but its best ideas still feel grounded in recognisable Italian pleasure.
Fresh pasta is a natural place to concentrate. Agnolotti with smoked ricotta, linguine with mussels, clams and saffron, or a garden-led risotto show how carefully the kitchen builds flavour without burying the main ingredient. Fish might pair Cornish cod with cucumber, smoked roe and oyster, while meat courses use bittersweet vegetables, herbs and well-made ragùs for balance. Murano suits diners who want Michelin-starred detail in a room that feels gracious and grown-up rather than theatrical.

Pavyllon London
Pavyllon London gives modern French cooking a more open, interactive setting inside the Four Seasons on Park Lane. Counter seats face the kitchen and are the best way to watch the brigade work; tables offer a more conventional hotel dining experience. Yannick Alléno’s framework is French, but seasonal British ingredients and global references keep the menu from feeling doctrinaire. The Michelin-starred restaurant is polished enough for an occasion while retaining a sense of movement and conversation.
The kitchen’s strengths lie in refined sauces, exact cooking and playful combinations. The Trout and Foie Gras Toasty is a current staff favourite, while other recent dishes have paired beef tataki with ginger and soy or monkfish with black-pepper oil and marbled beurre blanc. Menus are explicitly seasonal, so treat examples as a guide to the style. Choose a counter seat if watching the chefs adds to your evening, and consider Pavyllon when your party wants French technique with a broader, contemporary vocabulary.

Ormer Mayfair
Ormer sits inside Flemings Mayfair but has a distinct identity under chef Sofian Msetfi. His Moroccan and Irish roots inform a modern British tasting menu built on classical technique, clear seasoning and carefully controlled richness. The basement dining room is intimate and calm, with the pace and service expected of a Michelin-starred hotel restaurant. It is especially appealing for diners who want a full tasting experience in a smaller setting than Mayfair’s grandest rooms.
Seasonal menus can move from beetroot with smoked eel and horseradish to Newlyn turbot with Moroccan inflection, or Dover sole with mushrooms, asparagus and wild garlic. Desserts use combinations such as English saffron, citrus, chocolate and coriander, while the cheese trolley offers a traditional finish. Vegetarian, pescatarian and vegan paths require advance discussion, so declare preferences when reserving. Ormer is a persuasive choice for a quiet anniversary or food-focused evening where progression and detail matter more than spectacle.

Final Thoughts
Mayfair’s best restaurants do not offer one version of luxury. Sabor’s open-hearted Spanish cooking and Ambassadors Clubhouse’s Punjabi flavours feel completely different from the composed rituals of The Ritz or Hélène Darroze, yet all four give diners a clear reason to choose them. Hawksmoor remains the dependable answer for steak and a lively group meal, while HIDE offers the broadest combination of menu formats, views and wine depth.
For a quieter, more focused evening, match the cuisine to the occasion: UMU for Japanese seafood and kaiseki, Murano for elegant Italian cooking, Pavyllon for contemporary French technique at the counter, and Ormer for an intimate modern British tasting menu. Check the live menus below each entry before booking, tell the restaurant about dietary needs in advance, and leave enough time for the more ambitious experiences to unfold at their intended pace.
