Karen’s Unicorn is a traditional Chinese restaurant at 8B Abercromby Place in central Edinburgh. Its cooking is rooted in the Cantonese principle of preserving the character of the main ingredient, using seasoning to complement rather than overwhelm it.
Scottish produce appears naturally within that approach. House specialities such as salty and spicy squid and steamed sea bass with black bean sauce combine Cantonese techniques with seafood available locally.
The wider menu covers meat, poultry, seafood, rice and noodles, with dishes ranging from sweet and sour king prawns to chicken with ginger or cashew nuts. Beancurd, pak choi and mixed vegetables provide meat-free choices, and a separate gluten-free selection is available.
The restaurant opens for dinner from Tuesday to Sunday and offers both dine-in and takeaway service. Reservations are handled by telephone. Guests with allergies should speak with the team about garlic, soya, gluten, cooking wine, sesame and nuts before ordering.
