Crab quenelle with lobster bisque at Brasserie Zédel

French food in London can mean a quick steak haché before the theatre, a leisurely neighbourhood lunch or an evening built around a carefully paced tasting menu. The pleasure lies in the range: familiar bistro dishes sit alongside imaginative vegetable cooking, polished seafood courses and desserts that make a persuasive case for ordering one more thing.

Across the capital, these restaurants give French cooking different settings and personalities. Soho offers both a grand brasserie and a completely vegan dining room. Mayfair brings a more formal sense of occasion, while Wandsworth Common, Chiswick and Crouch End reward a trip beyond the West End with restaurants that suit a long lunch or an unhurried dinner.

If you are looking for the best French restaurants near you in London, start with the kind of meal you want and the neighbourhood you can reach comfortably. Compare current dishes and prices before booking, whether your priority is a set lunch, a classic sauce, a generous cheese selection or a special celebration.

Steak haché with peppercorn sauce at Brasserie Zédel

Brasserie Zedel

Brasserie Zédel brings the scale and bustle of a Parisian brasserie to Piccadilly. Descend from Sherwood Street and the dining room opens into a generous space of polished surfaces, closely attended tables and evening music. Its appeal extends well beyond the surroundings: a straightforward prix-fixe menu makes it possible to enjoy a proper sit-down French meal without committing to a lavish tasting-menu bill.

Steak haché with peppercorn sauce is a natural starting point, while the wider menu leaves room for seafood and familiar French preparations. Recent dishes have included a crab quenelle with lobster bisque, a good option when you want something richer than a light lunch. Check the set-menu choices before ordering and leave time for dessert. With the West End close by, Zédel fits neatly around a theatre visit or a day exploring central London.

Address: 20 Sherwood Street, London W1F 7ED

Vegan caviar on a savoury course at Gauthier Soho

Gauthier Soho

Gauthier Soho approaches French gastronomy through an entirely plant-based menu. Behind the door of its Romilly Street townhouse, Alexis Gauthier’s cooking gives vegetables, fruit and carefully developed savoury flavours the attention usually associated with a formal tasting menu. It is a particularly useful address for a celebration when vegan diners want the full restaurant experience, from the first small bites to the final sweet course.

The shorter Petit Dîner and longer Grand Dîner offer different ways to experience the kitchen, with seasonal dishes shaping the progression. A vegan interpretation of caviar illustrates its interest in familiar luxury ingredients rethought through plants. Expect a quiet, deliberate meal with time to notice the changing textures and flavours. Compare the two menus when booking, as their availability differs by service, and choose the longer experience when the evening itself is the main event.

Pigeon with lentils, confit leg and shallot at Chez Bruce

Chez Bruce

Overlooking Wandsworth Common, Chez Bruce is an inviting choice when you want accomplished French cooking in a neighbourhood setting. Bruce Poole and the team favour dishes with substance: well-made sauces, carefully handled fish and meat, seasonal vegetables and the sort of pastry work that deserves attention. The white-tablecloth dining room feels suited to a birthday lunch, a quiet dinner for two or a meal with friends who enjoy discussing what is on their plates.

The menu changes with the kitchen’s ingredients and ideas. Recent cooking has included pigeon with lentils, confit leg and shallot, while fish preparations and filled pasta show another side of its range. Look through all the courses before deciding, because the cheese selection is an attractive alternative to dessert. A walk on the common before or after lunch makes the location part of the occasion, rather than simply a journey to a table.

Lobster course from the seafood menu at The Ritz Restaurant

The Ritz Restaurant

The Ritz Restaurant is a destination for diners who enjoy the ceremony of a formal meal. John Williams and his team apply classical French techniques to seasonal produce, with careful cooking, sauces and tableside finishing contributing to the experience. It suits an anniversary or significant celebration when you want to dress for dinner, settle in and give the meal your full attention.

Seafood is a strong thread through the offering, while dishes such as beef Wellington and the restaurant’s tableside preparations express its classical character. Choose between the available lunch and dinner menus according to your appetite and the time you have. The restaurant is using an alternative dining room within the hotel during refurbishment, so check the current setting when booking. Gentlemen are required to wear a jacket and tie for lunch and dinner; planning around that formality is part of enjoying the occasion.

Address: 150 Piccadilly, London W1J 9BR

Apricot with summer flowers and buttermilk cream at Hélène Darroze at The Connaught

Helene Darroze at The Connaught

Hélène Darroze at The Connaught offers an intimate, highly considered expression of French dining in Mayfair. Seasonal ingredients shape a menu that rewards attention to the details of a sauce, the texture of seafood and the way each course moves into the next. The dining room’s contemporary design gives the meal a distinctive setting within the traditional hotel, making it an appealing choice for a celebration centred on food.

Tasting menus allow you to follow the kitchen’s progression, while the seasonal à la carte lunch provides another route into the restaurant. Recent desserts have included Provençal apricot with summer flowers and buttermilk cream, showing the attention given to fruit as well as fish and meat. Discuss preferences when reserving and allow enough time to enjoy the service without watching the clock. This is a restaurant for a leisurely experience: the pleasure comes from letting the courses unfold and giving the smaller details room to register.

Seasonal grouse dish at La Trompette in Chiswick

La Trompette

La Trompette makes Chiswick a rewarding destination for a French meal with a relaxed neighbourhood feel. Its cooking draws on French technique and Mediterranean flavours, with seasonal ingredients determining the finer details. The menu offers the structure of a proper three-course lunch or dinner, making it easy to settle into a meal without navigating a long tasting sequence.

Seafood and filled pasta provide useful starting points, while seasonal game such as grouse adds a richer late-summer option. Desserts and cheese give the final course equal importance. Look at the current menu rather than arriving fixed on a single dish, as accompaniments and preparations move with the season. The wine list offers plenty to explore, and asking for help matching a bottle to your choices can make the meal more enjoyable. For a catch-up with friends or a weekend lunch in west London, La Trompette is a comfortable place to linger.

Aged Blue Grey beef with artichoke and morels at Pétrus

Petrus by Gordon Ramsay

Pétrus by Gordon Ramsay offers precise French cooking in a dining room arranged around its striking glass wine display. The Kinnerton Street address sits between the bustle of Knightsbridge and the quieter streets of Belgravia, making it convenient for an elegant lunch or a carefully planned dinner. The emphasis is on composed plates, polished service and a menu that gives individual ingredients a clear role.

Compare the à la carte, lunch and tasting options before booking, as each creates a different rhythm for the meal. Recent Discovery menu cooking has paired aged Blue Grey beef with artichoke and morels, combining a substantial main ingredient with carefully chosen accompaniments. Wine is a significant part of the offering, so decide whether you want a pairing or a bottle chosen around your order. It is especially well suited to diners who enjoy a structured meal and time to appreciate each course.

Spiced roast duck with cherries at Maison François

Maison Francois

Maison François combines a lively French brasserie menu with a handsome St James’s dining room. It works for several occasions, from lunch after visiting the galleries around Piccadilly to dinner with friends who want a table with some energy around it. The cooking gives familiar French ideas a contemporary presentation, with small opening dishes, substantial mains and a particularly tempting approach to dessert.

A cheese gougère or another savoury bite is a pleasing way to begin, followed by a main that suits your appetite rather than an automatic sequence of shared plates. Spiced roast duck with cherries captures the kitchen’s balance of rich meat, fruit and sauce. Save room for the dessert trolley, which turns the final choice into part of the entertainment. If you want to extend the evening, Frank’s bar downstairs offers a separate setting for a drink before heading back into the West End.

Pigeon with vegetables at Les 2 Garçons in Crouch End

Les 2 Garcons Bistro

Les 2 Garçons brings the pleasures of a French neighbourhood bistro to Crouch End: a welcoming room, a blackboard of changing dishes and cooking that puts familiar classics to good use. Robert Reid’s kitchen and Jean-Christophe Slowik’s hospitality give the restaurant a personal character. It is the sort of place to book when you want a convivial meal with friends and something satisfying at the centre of the table.

French onion soup, snails, duck confit and steak frites are dishes to look out for as you read the day’s choices. The specials are worth considering too, particularly when seasonal meat or fish catches your eye. Leave room for a classic pudding; an apple tart or another pastry-led dessert provides a fitting finish when available. The room is intimate and tables can be close, so reserve ahead and arrive ready to enjoy the bustle of a small bistro.

Address: 14 Middle Lane, London N8 8PL

Strawberry crémeux with almond and elderflower at Galvin La Chapelle

Galvin La Chapelle

Galvin La Chapelle occupies a striking former school building in Spitalfields, with tall windows and stone arches giving a meal an immediate sense of occasion. Its French foundations now meet a broad Mediterranean influence, producing a menu that moves between refined seafood, seasonal vegetables and substantial sharing dishes. The location near Liverpool Street makes it useful for a City lunch or dinner after exploring the surrounding streets.

A Dorset crab raviolo with fennel and beurre blanc gives a good sense of the kitchen’s approach, while sole meunière and côte de boeuf offer larger dishes to share. Compare the current set lunch and tasting menus if you want a more structured choice. Desserts also reflect the restaurant’s range, from a Sunday apple tart tatin to strawberry crémeux with almond and fermented elderflower. Choose a menu that suits your appetite, as richer sauces and several courses can make this a substantial meal.

Final Thoughts

London’s French restaurants offer plenty of ways to make a meal feel like an occasion. Brasserie Zédel suits a central London lunch or theatre evening, while Gauthier Soho gives plant-based dining a full tasting-menu treatment. Chez Bruce, La Trompette and Les 2 Garçons bring different neighbourhood settings to the pleasure of a carefully cooked French meal.

For a more formal celebration, explore the menus at the Ritz, Hélène Darroze at The Connaught or Pétrus; Maison François and Galvin La Chapelle offer their own distinctive atmosphere. Compare current dishes and prices, check the service that best fits your plans, and book a table with enough time to enjoy the meal.
