Chai St Indian Bistro is an all day Indian restaurant at 15 High Street beside Cardiff Castle. The current bistro grew from the same family and kitchen associated with Mint & Mustard at this address, bringing a more relaxed rhythm to a well established dining site. It opens from midday every day, with brunch beginning earlier from Friday to Sunday.
The menu moves between Indian street food, regional curries and more composed bistro dishes. Influences range from Mumbai and Old Delhi to Rajasthan, Kashmir, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, allowing diners to compare very different uses of spice. Signature choices can include slow cooked lamb shank, sea bass with curry leaf and duck Chettinad.
A weekday lunch thali combines a changing curry with rice, roti, dal, raita, pickle and poppadum. Weekend brunch, small plates and chai provide lighter ways to use the restaurant, while vegetarian dishes are integrated throughout the selection. A dedicated allergen guide is available, and guests with serious allergies should still discuss the current menu with staff.
Cocktails, beer, wine and chai give the bistro a drinks programme that can carry a visit from afternoon into dinner. Walk ins are welcome, although booking can be useful on busier evenings. Chai St is particularly suited to diners who want regional Indian cooking in an informal setting where several plates can be shared without rushing the meal.
