Surry Hills is one of Sydney’s most rewarding dining neighbourhoods, a place where destination restaurants, inventive wine bars and deeply personal family-run kitchens sit within a few walkable blocks. Crown Street supplies much of the bustle, but some of the suburb’s most memorable tables are tucked along quieter lanes and side streets, turning dinner into an excuse to explore.
The range is a large part of the appeal. You can move from Lebanese feasting and fire-led modern Australian cooking to Japanese-Italian share plates, Korean family recipes, ramen, yakitori and North African comfort food. The best rooms feel distinctly local even when their flavours travel widely: energetic without becoming anonymous, polished without losing warmth.
This guide covers standout choices for celebratory dinners, casual lunches, dates, group meals and nights built around wine or cocktails. Menus and trading hours can change, so it is sensible to check the latest details and reserve ahead where possible—particularly for compact dining rooms and weekend services.

Nour
Nour brings contemporary precision to Lebanese and broader Levantine flavours without losing the generous spirit of a shared meal. Its softly coloured Crown Street dining room is elegant but lively, with an open kitchen and wood-fired oven providing both theatre and the foundations of the menu. House-made breads, dips, pickles, yoghurt and preserves establish the kitchen’s attention to detail before the larger dishes arrive.
The cooking is bold, layered and designed for the table. Familiar ingredients such as tahini, labneh, harissa and tarator appear in carefully judged combinations, while seafood, vegetables and richly flavoured meats give groups plenty of ways to build a balanced feast. Nour works especially well for a long lunch or celebration: the room feels glamorous in daylight, cocktails carry the same Levantine accents as the food, and set-menu options remove the pressure of ordering for a crowd.

NOMAD
NOMAD’s spacious Foster Street dining room is built around fire, smoke and produce-driven cooking. The menu takes inspiration from Spain, Morocco and the Middle East, then expresses those influences through Australian ingredients and a confident sharing format. The open kitchen, wood-fired oven and charcoal grill give the warehouse-like room a sense of motion, making a counter seat particularly appealing for diners who enjoy watching a busy service unfold.
House-made charcuterie and warm flatbread are natural starting points, followed by dishes that might combine cannellini-bean hummus with spiced lamb, roast cauliflower with truffle honey, or slow-cooked meat with bright chilli and herb condiments. The olive-oil ice-cream sandwich remains a persuasive reason to save room for dessert. NOMAD is equally suited to a date, a substantial group dinner or a leisurely lunch, helped by generous portions and a wine list that gives sustainable small producers serious attention.

Ito Surry Hills
Ito is a modern neighbourhood izakaya where Japanese technique and Italian culinary instincts meet naturally. The connection is more thoughtful than novelty-driven: raw seafood, dashi, ponzu and miso may share a plate with pasta-making traditions, brown butter or bottarga. Spread across a warm, restrained Crown Street space, the restaurant feels polished enough for an occasion while retaining the relaxed rhythm of a share-plate dinner.
The menu rewards curiosity. Hiramasa kingfish with wakame, fennel and white ponzu shows the lighter side of the kitchen, while dishes such as seafood ravioli or Wagyu mafaldine explore the deeper overlap between Japanese umami and Italian richness. Vegetables receive the same care as the proteins, and the sake, cocktail and wine choices make it easy to shape either a quick meal or a full evening. Bookings are useful on busy nights, particularly if you want one of the more intimate seats.

Sake Flights
FLORAL & PURE
Focused on the fragrant and fruit-driven styles of Ginjo sake, this flight showcases the more delicate nature of these highly polished rice varieties
EARTHY & UMAMI
Traversing the more savoury dimensions of sake the Junmai flight highlights the array of umami notes from the coarser polished varieties
SWEET & FRUITY
Bright and sweet, this selection of sake exhibits the ever-popular infusion of seasonal fruit with sake, produced by some of the top breweries in the country
Floral & Pure Sake
Kinoshita Shuzō ‘Ice Breaker’ - Junmai Ginjo Kyoto, Jp
Nihonbare 60%; Off-dry fruity mouthfeel, hints of aniseed and melon and fine refreshing acidity.
Chikuma Nishiki 'Kizan Sanban’ - Junmai Ginjo Nagano, Jp
Miyama Nishiki 55%; Refreshing acidity creates a smooth rounded palate with flavours of apple, aniseed, rich, round palate and balanced acidity, with a very ‘Ginjo’ aromatic intensity.
Miyoshino Jozo 'Hanatomoe Yamahai’ - Junmai Yamahai Nara , Jp
Multi-Rice Blend 70%; High acidity and great structure. A dense richness on the palate, with spice, stone fruit and a balanced powerful acidic backbone.
Earthy & Umami Sake
Kinoshita Tamagawa ‘Tokubetsu’ - Junmai Kyoto, Jp
Gohyakumangoku 65%; This sake shows a nutty, savoury nose. Medium-bodied on the palate with a fine bright acidity and tannin-like finish.
Uehara Shuzō ‘Furosen’ - Junmai Ginjo Shiga, Jp
Kameno-O 55%; Made using an ancient table rice variety, producing a ripe Ginjo with robust and balanced savoury characters. Medium bodied with expressions of miso caramel, sesame, clove and lifted aromas of tonka bean and plantain banana.
Akishika Shuzō ‘Kobo #7’- Junmai (Served Warm Optional) Osaka, Jp
Yamadanishiki 70%; A specialty sake brewed in 2015 and aged at the brewery for 7 years prior to release. Complex and rich in character with honeyed notes, spiced nuts and an elegant savoury finish.
Sweet Fruit Sake
CHOYA UJI GREEN TEA UMESHU
Umeshu cold-brewed with green tea from the Uji region in Kyoto. Elegant taste with a relaxing aroma.
KIKUSUI ARAGOSHI MOMOSHU
Sake mixed with ripe white peaches. Easy drinking with delicate sweetness and full-bodied texture.
OTA SHUZŌ ‘DOKAN’ UMESHU
Sake infused with ume fruit, ume paste, and sugar. Sweet and tart character on the palate with a full body and refreshing acidic finish.
HEIWA SHUZŌ YUZUSHU
One year old Junmai Sake mixed with yuzu juice in a 1:1 ratio. Fresh yuzu aroma with a zest body and sweet and fresh fruit finish.
AKISHIKA 'PRESSED MOTO'
Aromas of pear, apple, elderflower, and rice bran lead into a palate that is gently sweet with refreshing acidity reminiscent of green apple.

Poly
Poly sits at the ground level of Paramount House, combining the looseness of a neighbourhood wine bar with the technique of a serious restaurant. Its kitchen is powered by fire, and the compact menu uses smoke, fermentation, acidity and texture to make small plates feel complete rather than incidental. The room is warm and unfussy, with counter and communal seating encouraging the kind of spontaneous ordering that suits a second glass of wine.
The signature fried potato with salted egg yolk and chives captures Poly’s style: familiar in outline, exacting in execution and intensely savoury. Depending on the season, the menu may move through tartare, smoked vegetables, shellfish and carefully grilled meats, all arranged for sharing. The wine list focuses on organic and biodynamic producers and is a central part of the experience, but knowledgeable service keeps it approachable. Come for a full dinner or use the aperitivo window for drinks and a few sharply conceived snacks.

Firedoor
Firedoor is defined by a complete commitment to cooking with wood fire. There is no gas or electricity in the kitchen’s cooking equipment; instead, ovens, grills and a hearth are matched to different ingredients and types of wood. The result is not simply smoky food. Chef-owner Lennox Hastie’s approach uses flame, embers and residual heat to draw out sweetness, deepen savoury flavours and add exceptionally fine control to a daily changing menu.
Seasonality makes every visit slightly different, with seafood, vegetables and carefully sourced meat treated according to what suits them rather than forced into fixed signatures. Dry-aged beef may be the famous drawcard, but the quieter dishes often reveal the kitchen’s skill just as clearly. The open kitchen turns dinner into absorbing theatre, while the structured chef’s menu makes Firedoor best suited to diners happy to surrender some decisions. It is a considered, premium experience, so allow time and book well ahead.

Surry Hills GOGYO
GOGYO expands the ramen-bar idea into a polished, energetic restaurant with cocktails, Japanese small plates and a dramatic open kitchen. Its defining bowl is kogashi-style ramen, made by scorching miso or soy at high heat to create a dark, aromatic broth with roasted depth. The spectacle is part of the pleasure, but the technique matters more: when everything lands correctly, the broth is intense without becoming blunt, with springy noodles and carefully chosen toppings providing balance.
Diners who prefer a more familiar profile can look to tonkotsu or lighter ramen options, while gyoza, buns and other snacks turn a bowl into a broader shared meal. The spacious Albion Street room makes GOGYO easier for groups than many compact noodle shops, and the bar program encourages a slower evening rather than a rapid solo stop. It remains a strong all-round choice when one person wants deeply savoury ramen and everyone else wants the atmosphere of a proper night out.

Yulli’s Bar & Restaurant
Yulli’s has been part of Crown Street since 2008, building a loyal following around plant-based cooking that treats vegetables as the main event. Rather than imitating meat-heavy menus, the kitchen draws freely from Asian, Mediterranean and Latin American flavours to create colourful plates with plenty of crunch, spice and acidity. The narrow, art-lined room is casual and convivial, helped by warm service and an easygoing mix of diners.
Share plates are the best way to explore the menu. Crispy parcels, dumplings, roasted vegetables, curries and grain-based dishes are layered with nutty sauces, herbs, pickles and fermented elements, giving the table variety without relying on animal products. Gluten-free choices are also well represented. Yulli’s own craft beers sit naturally beside the food, while vegan wines and cocktails broaden the options. It is especially useful for mixed groups seeking an inclusive restaurant that still feels lively and characterful.

Sang by Mabasa
Sang by Mabasa is a compact, family-run Korean restaurant that feels personal from the moment you enter. The menu includes recognisable favourites, but its real strength is the space it gives to dishes that appear less often in Sydney’s Korean dining rooms. Thoughtful presentation and a modern setting never erase the sense of family cooking; the flavours remain direct, generous and grounded in well-made pickles, broths and marinades.
A crisp kimchi or cabbage pancake is an excellent beginning, followed by options such as handmade dumplings, pork jowl, noodles with baby abalone or a carefully arranged wrap dish like yassam. Korean fried chicken and bulgogi keep the menu accessible for first-time visitors, while the set menu lets the kitchen show more range. The Fitzroy Street dining room is small, so booking is wise. Attentive guidance from the team makes it particularly good for diners keen to move beyond the standard barbecue format.

Cafe Tanja
Cafe Tanja brings the cooking and hospitality of Morocco, Algeria and the wider Maghreb to the southern end of Crown Street. Run by a family team, the warmly decorated room feels closer to a generous home than a formal dining destination. Much of the food is made by hand, from breads to pastries, and the menu offers Sydney diners a welcome chance to explore North African dishes beyond the most familiar versions of couscous and tagine.
Start with a crisp brik or a plate of tchouktchouka, where eggs meet a deeply spiced tomato and capsicum base. Slow-cooked lamb tagine with prunes and almonds delivers the classic sweet-savoury contrast, while chicken, couscous and stuffed msemen offer other comforting routes through the menu. Finish with Moroccan mint tea poured from a silver pot and something sweet. The service is notably warm, and the relatively small room makes advance planning worthwhile for dinner or a busy weekend brunch.

Tokyo Bird
Hidden off Commonwealth Street with its entrance on Belmore Lane, Tokyo Bird channels the intimate mood of a Japanese backstreet bar. Whisky and cocktails are central to the identity, but the charcoal grill gives the venue enough substance for dinner. Low lighting, close-set seating and a compact room create an atmospheric setting for a date or a catch-up, while later trading hours make it a useful stop after work or before a night elsewhere in the city.
Yakitori is the natural focus: chicken thigh with shallot, wings, skin, hearts and tsukune meatballs are grilled and finished with tare or bright seasonings. Pork, mushrooms, eggplant and other vegetables broaden the skewers, while Japanese-style snacks and desserts fill out the meal. The drinks list ranges from approachable highballs to rare Japanese whisky, with bartenders able to steer newcomers through it. Tokyo Bird is an adults-only venue, and a reservation helps when the small room is at its most animated.
Address: Shop 2, 226–228 Commonwealth Street, Surry Hills NSW 2010 (entrance via Belmore Lane)

Final Thoughts
The pleasure of eating in Surry Hills comes from the neighbourhood’s range as much as any individual restaurant. Nour, NOMAD and Ito can anchor a special evening; Poly and Firedoor make technique and produce the focus; GOGYO and Tokyo Bird offer two very different expressions of Japanese dining; and Yulli’s, Sang and Cafe Tanja bring strong identities and genuine warmth to Crown Street and its surrounding lanes.
Choose according to the occasion, appetite and pace you want. A counter seat can turn dinner into theatre, a banquet can simplify a group celebration, and a compact family-run room can make a casual meal feel memorable. Surry Hills rewards a little planning, but it also encourages return visits—there is always another side street, menu or style of hospitality to discover.
