Le Beaujolais has brought a distinctly French spirit to Litchfield Street since 1972. Hidden between Soho and Covent Garden, the small wine bar offers a welcome pause from the movement of the West End and has remained proudly independent for more than fifty years. Its deep red frontage, traditional windows and intimate room create an immediate sense of character. The location is particularly convenient for a glass before the theatre, a spontaneous lunch or a relaxed evening that begins with wine and continues at its own pace.
French wine is the heart of the experience, with a list that explores different regions, grapes and expressions of terroir. The selection is intended to show the variety of French winemaking rather than concentrate only on famous labels, giving curious guests room to discover something unfamiliar. Staff knowledge and an unhurried atmosphere make it easy to ask for guidance, whether the preference is for a bright white, a structured red or the fresh character of Beaujolais. Each glass feels connected to the place and people behind it.
Food follows the rustic traditions of a French wine bar. Cheese and charcuterie are natural companions to the cellar, while hot bistro favourites such as steak and croque monsieur offer a more substantial meal. The approach is deliberately simple, relying on good products, familiar recipes and combinations that allow the wine to remain part of the conversation. Sharing a board works well for an informal visit, while the broader menu gives lunch and dinner enough substance to turn an intended quick drink into a complete occasion.
The public wine bar occupies the ground floor and welcomes walk in guests, with table sharing adding to its sociable atmosphere when the room is busy. Downstairs, a private members club continues another side of the venue’s long history, but the open bar remains the starting point for most visitors. Old posters, close set tables and lively conversation create the impression of a small piece of France in central London. Le Beaujolais endures because it values tradition without making hospitality feel exclusive or staged.
