L’Artiste Musclé is a small French bistro and wine bar at 1 Shepherd Market in Mayfair. Founded in 1971 by an Olympic wrestler who was also a silversmith and sculptor, it grew from a basement wine bar into a much loved restaurant with the easy character of a neighbourhood Parisian dining room.
Traditional French starters and lighter plates set the tone, with pâté, cheese, salads, moules marinière and other bistro favourites prepared in a compact kitchen. The cooking is generous and comforting, reflecting the restaurant’s long history rather than chasing elaborate presentation.
Bœuf bourguignon, steak with pommes frites, duck casserole and creamy chicken with leek show the hearty side of the menu. Rich sauces and slow cooked dishes are balanced by fish, vegetables and changing daily choices, giving regular guests different reasons to return.
The wine list is exclusively French, bringing together approachable bottles and styles selected to complement the food. Original posters, closely set tables and a private downstairs area for up to twenty five people make L’Artiste Musclé suitable for intimate dinners, long lunches and characterful celebrations.
