Abyssinia Cafe & Restaurant is an Ethiopian restaurant at 12 Ashley Road in Harehills, Leeds. Opened in 2014, it introduces diners to traditional East African flavours through a warm, communal style of eating, with dishes arranged on injera and shared around the table.
Injera is central to the meal. The naturally gluten free teff flatbread works as both a base and an edible utensil, absorbing the sauces from slow cooked stews and vegetables while diners tear pieces from the edge to gather each mouthful.
Meat dishes include doro wot, spiced lamb preparations and several styles of tibs, while the Abyssinia Special combines a broad selection for a group. Beyaynetu brings together several vegan curries and vegetables, and shiro tegamino offers a richly seasoned chickpea stew for another substantial plant based choice.
The traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony extends the experience beyond the main meal, with coffee prepared in a jebena and served over several rounds. Halal cooking, vegetarian and vegan variety, and family style platters make the restaurant particularly well suited to groups who want to explore different flavours together.
