Macau Kitchen is a compact restaurant at 93 St Leonard's Street in Edinburgh dedicated to Macanese cuisine. Founded by chef Kei de Freitas, it introduces diners to a food culture shaped by centuries of exchange between Portuguese and Chinese traditions, alongside influences that travelled through Asia.
The cooking combines European techniques and ingredients with the aromatics, sauces and spice profiles of southern China and other Portuguese trading communities. Its daily menu is supported by special events and chef-led dining options, giving regular guests different ways to explore this distinctive culinary heritage.
The small dining room creates a personal format in which the food and its background can be explained at the table. Desserts complete the experience, while the restaurant operates a bring your own bottle policy for alcohol and applies corkage rather than running an alcoholic drinks list.
Reservations are encouraged because seating is limited, and each guest is expected to order a main course. The cuisine relies on ingredients including garlic, onion, soy sauce and shellfish, so anyone with allergies or dietary requirements should discuss them with the restaurant before booking.
