The Tiroler Hut is a family run Austrian restaurant hidden below 27 Westbourne Grove in Bayswater. Josef opened the restaurant in June 1967 and remains at its heart alongside members of his family. After a four year closure caused by a fire in 2019, the Hut returned with its intimate Alpine interior, generous hospitality and distinctive sense of occasion intact.
A visit combines dinner with live entertainment from Josef on accordion, saxophone, keyboard, clarinet and cowbells. The basement dining room encourages singing, conversation and audience participation, making the restaurant especially well suited to birthdays and lively group evenings. Beer, Austrian wine and schnapps reinforce the convivial atmosphere as the music continues around the tables.
The food centres on hearty Austrian and Central European comfort dishes. Veal and chicken schnitzel arrive with sautéed potatoes and cranberry sauce, while Hungarian beef goulash is served with small egg dumplings. Käsespätzle combines homemade dumplings, onions and cheese, and further choices include roast pork, pork knuckle, sausage with sauerkraut, steak, sea bass and cheese fondue for two.
Bratwurst, cheese filled Käsekrainer, goulash soup, garlic butter prawns and a mixed sausage plate provide substantial ways to begin. Red cabbage, cucumber salad, potato salad, sauerkraut and seasonal vegetables complete the main courses. Apple strudel, Sacher torte and Kaiserschmarrn with plum compote bring the meal to a traditional sweet finish before the evening entertainment carries on.
