Bertie’s Proper Fish & Chips is a large, family friendly restaurant on Victoria Street in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Opened in 2018 and part of the Vittoria Group, it turns the familiar fish supper into a full seated experience close to the Royal Mile. The spacious dining room can accommodate couples, families and very large groups without losing the directness of a chip shop meal.
Sustainably sourced haddock is available in traditional batter, breadcrumbs or lighter baked preparations, served with twice cooked chips and tartare sauce. The standard frying uses beef dripping for a rich, crisp finish. A separate part of the range uses vegetable oil for gluten free items, although guests with dietary requirements should still explain them to the team before ordering.
Chip shop classics extend to sausage, scampi, haggis, white pudding and a mixed seafood fritto. Vegan fish and chips and vegetarian haggis give meat free diners substantial options rather than leaving them with side dishes. Sauces and Scottish inspired accompaniments let guests tailor the plate while retaining the straightforward character of the food.
A children’s menu, set menu and dedicated group arrangements make Bertie’s practical for many kinds of visit. Desserts are deliberately playful, combining ice cream, doughnuts, chocolate and traditional sweets, while the drinks list supports a longer restaurant meal. The result blends Edinburgh produce and local flavour with the scale and convenience of a central Old Town dining room.
