Duchy is a neighbourhood restaurant at 18 Phipp Street in Shoreditch, inspired by the historic Duchy of Savoy between southern France and northern Italy. The compact dining room retains a long marble bar, an open kitchen and a wall of record sleeves, giving lunch and dinner a warm bistro atmosphere. A concise seasonal menu allows individual ingredients and classic regional techniques to remain clearly defined.
Small plates can include Comté and wild garlic gougères with walnut ketchup, smoked haddock beignets with rouille, white crab mayonnaise on potato rösti and prosciutto cotto with cornichons. Steak tartare with egg yolk and shoestring fries sits beside lighter vegetable and fish dishes such as pumpkin with Gorgonzola or wild sea bass carpaccio with blood orange and chilli.
Handmade pasta and substantial mains draw equally on French and Italian traditions. Ricotta gnudi with cavolo nero, Pecorino and pine nuts and spaghetti with clams and lemon offer contrasting pasta courses. Cornish sea trout with a fried oyster and beurre blanc and a grilled pork chop with purple broccoli and smoked garlic butter carry the menu into richer territory.
Gratin dauphinois with Taleggio and grilled Savoy cabbage with smoked cod roe make expressive accompaniments. Desserts can include a choux bun with coffee mascarpone and pears, custard tart with rhubarb, or chocolate mousse with Grand Marnier crème anglaise. Cheese from the Alpine region and a wine list chosen around the same geography complete Duchy's focused interpretation of the Savoy table.
