L’Escargot is a Soho institution at 48 Greek Street and is recognised as London’s oldest French restaurant. Established in 1896 and based in its elegant Georgian townhouse since 1927, it combines historic surroundings with the polish and generosity of a traditional Parisian grand brasserie.
The famous house snails arrive in aromatic garlic butter and can be flambéed with Pernod. French onion soup, langoustine bisque, foie gras terrine, oysters and seasonal salads broaden the opening courses, moving between rich classics and lighter dishes shaped by the best available produce.
Main courses include moules marinière with fries, lobster Thermidor, duck confit, steak with peppercorn sauce and the celebrated Tournedos Rossini with foie gras and truffle. Fish, risotto and vegetable dishes add flexibility while keeping the cooking rooted in familiar French technique.
Crème brûlée, rum baba, chocolate soufflé, madeleines and French cheese provide a suitably traditional finish, supported by wine and cocktails. Pre theatre, Sunday lunch and late night menus suit different Soho schedules, while elegant private rooms upstairs provide memorable spaces for celebrations and business dining.
