Hata is a small independent café at 5 Rodney Street in Edinburgh’s Canonmills neighbourhood. Andrew and Agata opened it in 2020 as a warm community space, taking inspiration from breakfast discoveries made while travelling in Southeast Asia and giving them a distinctly Scottish foundation.
Oats are central to the café’s identity. Its weekly changing porridge combines Scottish oats with inventive homemade toppings, while granola and overnight oats bring fruit, nuts, compotes and other seasonal ingredients into breakfast bowls served through the early part of the day.
The menu goes beyond breakfast with avocado on sourdough, toasted croissants, sandwiches and a changing vegan soup. Several oat dishes can be made vegan, and the kitchen clearly notes that its oats are not certified gluten free because of possible cross contamination during production.
Espresso drinks, loose leaf tea, Vietnamese coffee and house kombucha accompany the food, with seasonal cakes and pastries available for a sweeter visit. The cosy room works well for meeting friends or settling in with a book, and guests with allergies should discuss current recipes and preparation with the café team.
