Empress Bar & Grill is a Nigerian restaurant and bar at 82–89 Cecil Street in Birmingham. Its informal dining room is designed for straightforward meals with friends as well as celebrations and group functions, with Nigerian food at the centre of the experience.
Smoky jollof rice, fried plantain, pounded yam and white rice with stew provide familiar foundations for the main menu. Diners can pair them with traditional soups such as egusi, efo riro, bitterleaf, ogbono or oha, each built around its own combination of vegetables, seeds, fish, meat and West African seasoning.
The grill section uses marinades containing West African spices before beef suya, chicken, gizzard, fish or lamb is cooked over charcoal. Small plates and snacks include puff puff, meat pies and gizdodo, while a children’s section offers simpler combinations for younger diners.
Nigerian beers, palm wine and other bar choices accompany the food, and takeaway ordering is available alongside eating in. The grill spices are prepared with nuts and several soups contain fish or crayfish, so guests with allergies should speak with staff before choosing dishes.
