Arepa & Co Haggerston is a Venezuelan restaurant beside Regent’s Canal on De Beauvoir Crescent. The cosy dining room, terrace and waterside seats give this original branch a relaxed East London character, while the food introduces recipes shaped by corn, plantain, beans, avocado and slow cooked meat. It opens for lunch and dinner during the week, with brunch extending the experience on weekends and bank holidays.
Small plates are designed for sharing and offer an easy introduction to Venezuelan flavours. Tequeños wrap cheese in crisp pastry, while tostones use twice cooked green plantain as a base for avocado, pico de gallo and spicy mayonnaise. Cassava, black beans, fried plantain and other familiar ingredients appear in different combinations, with vegan and vegetarian choices clearly represented across the menu.
Arepas are round corn breads split and filled to order, naturally free from gluten and intended to be eaten by hand. Pabellón combines shredded beef, black beans, ripe plantain and cheese, while other fillings include chicken with avocado, crisp pork belly, grilled aubergine or a plant based mix of beans, plantain and avocado. Cachapas use sweetcorn batter to make a soft folded pancake filled with savoury ingredients.
Bowls and a tasting menu provide alternatives for diners who want several parts of the menu in one meal. Weekend brunch brings Venezuelan ingredients into generous morning dishes, while homemade lemonade and cocktails suit the canal side setting. Tres leches cake, chocolate tequeños, Venezuelan affogato and dulce de leche ice cream continue the regional theme through dessert.
