Black Cat Cafe is a community minded vegan cafe at 76A Clarence Road in Hackney. Established as a workers’ cooperative, it has an informal, independent character and provides a relaxed place for breakfast, lunch, coffee or an unhurried catch-up in the neighbourhood.
Everything served is plant based, and the food menu changes regularly according to the ingredients and ideas available. Vegan breakfasts, generous sandwiches, soups, salads and daily specials can appear alongside comfort food such as burgers, burritos, curries and seitan based plates.
The cafe also puts care into drinks and sweets. Coffee, tea and locally brewed kombucha accompany a counter of cakes and desserts, with items such as tiramisu, cinnamon rolls, bread pudding and cheesecake either made in house or supplied by independent vegan bakeries.
Black Cat’s identity reaches beyond the food through its cooperative ethos, community connections and small selection of books and locally made products. The unpretentious room welcomes children and casual takeaway customers as comfortably as people settling in to eat a full meal.
