Roti King began with chef and founder Sugen Gopal, whose understanding of Malaysian cooking was shaped in his family’s restaurant in Ipoh. After bringing that experience to London, he established a permanent home near Euston and built the restaurant around the food he knew best. The original Doric Way branch sits below street level in a compact, informal space that keeps diners close to the action. Its success has led to several further locations, but Euston remains closely connected to the story and character of Roti King.
Roti canai is the centre of the experience. The dough is stretched until remarkably thin, folded with practiced movement and cooked on a hot plate with butter and oil to create a bread that is crisp, soft and layered at once. Diners tear it by hand and dip each piece into dhal or a choice of fragrant curry, allowing the bread to carry every part of the sauce. The technique demands skill and repetition, and the open preparation gives guests a direct view of the craft behind a seemingly simple dish.
The wider menu explores Malaysian and Singaporean street food through noodle dishes, rice plates, sides and sweets. Stirred noodles, spiced rice and slow cooked curries reflect the meeting of Malay, Chinese and Indian influences that gives Malaysian food its remarkable range. Rich flavours are balanced with chilli, herbs, aromatics and sharp accompaniments, while vegetarian and vegan choices make it easy for varied groups to order together. Pulled tea offers a traditional companion to the meal and adds its own gentle sweetness.
Roti King Euston operates on a walk in basis, which suits its spontaneous and energetic style. The room is often busy with commuters, students, local residents and visitors drawn by the restaurant’s reputation, yet the service remains focused on getting freshly cooked food to the table without unnecessary ceremony. Eating here feels immediate and personal, from watching the roti take shape to sharing curry in the lively basement dining room. It is an approachable introduction to Malaysian cooking with a strong sense of family knowledge behind it.
