The Guildford Arms is a historic pub and restaurant at 1–5 West Register Street in Edinburgh. It has remained in the ownership of the Stewart family since 1896 and is known for its richly decorated plaster ceiling, dark wood bar and upper gallery dining room. The position close to Waverley station makes it convenient without diminishing the sense of entering a distinctive old pub.
Scottish and British pub cooking provides the foundation of the food menu. Soups, seafood, haggis, pies, fish and chips, burgers and changing main dishes offer a mixture of lighter lunches and substantial meals. Seasonal vegetables and locally familiar ingredients keep the selection connected to its Edinburgh setting rather than turning the restaurant into a generic city bar.
Vegetarian dishes and adaptable sides help mixed groups dine together, while daily specials can expand the choice beyond the printed menu. Guests with allergies should ask staff for the latest ingredient information because sauces, pastry and shared preparation can contain several major allergens. Diners can eat in the main bar or choose the gallery for a slightly more composed restaurant experience.
A regularly changing range of cask ale is central to the Guildford Arms, supported by craft beer, whisky, wine and other drinks. The grand interior and measured pace make it equally suitable for a pre theatre meal, a quiet city lunch or an unhurried pint. Its lasting appeal comes from the combination of family continuity, carefully kept surroundings and dependable pub hospitality.
