Lurra is a Basque restaurant on Seymour Place in Marylebone, opened in 2015 by restaurateurs Melody and Nemanja. Its name means land in Basque, a reflection of the kitchen's focus on natural, carefully sourced produce and the traditional hospitality of northern Spain.
Cooking takes its lead from the charcoal and wood fired erretegia grills found across the Basque Country. The heat is used to amplify rather than disguise the ingredients, whether the kitchen is preparing wild turbot, octopus with piquillo pepper or a simple seasonal tomato salad.
Galician Blond beef is one of Lurra's defining ingredients. The mature, grass fed cattle are raised in northern Spain, and the resulting txuleta steaks place texture, depth of flavour and careful grilling at the centre of the meal.
Burnt Basque cheesecake provides a characteristic finish, while a wine list built around indigenous Spanish and Basque grapes keeps the regional identity clear. A first floor private dining room overlooking the courtyard also makes the restaurant suitable for celebrations and group meals.
