Kokum is a modern Indian restaurant and bar at 58-60 East Dulwich Road. It was created by Sanjay Gour and Simeron Lily Patel, whose restaurant experience also includes Dastaan and Black Salt. The polished yet relaxed dining room brings ambitious Indian cooking to a neighbourhood setting, with a private room available for larger occasions.
The meal can begin with papad and chutneys, crispy aloo tuk, pani puri, dahi puri or samosa chaat. Amritsari fish, spinach and kale bhajiyas and chicken lollipops add contrasting textures, while the grill prepares tandoori cauliflower, chutney paneer tikka, chicken chops, lamb chops, prawns and a duck and chicken seekh kebab.
Curries range from paneer makhani, Amritsari chickpeas and chicken Kolhapuri to lamb rogan josh, slow cooked lamb shank nihari and pork vindaloo. Malvani fish uses coastal spices and coconut, while prawns appear in a sauce scented with lime leaf and lemongrass. Puff pastry crusted chicken tikka and wild mushroom biryanis provide aromatic rice centrepieces.
Naan, laccha paratha, tandoori roti, saffron pulao and steamed rice make it easy to build a complete table around the main dishes. Slow cooked black lentil dal, roasted aubergine mash, yellow lentil tadka and spinach with wild mushrooms bring depth to the sides, while cocktails, wine and the full bar extend the restaurant’s modern approach beyond the kitchen.
