Katakata is a community cafe and social enterprise at 132A Brixton Hill. Founded in 2015, it is led by Deaf and disabled people and works to create a welcoming, accessible space for the wider neighbourhood. Food, creativity and inclusion come together in a relaxed setting suited to coffee, lunch, conversation and regular community events.
Buckwheat galettes are a longstanding speciality, folded around colourful combinations of vegetables, grains and plant based sauces. Mushroom, spinach, green beans, quinoa, sweet plantain, callaloo and jerk aubergine bring together French technique with African and Caribbean flavours. Vegetarian and vegan choices are central to the menu rather than treated as limited substitutes.
Soups, salads and changing bowls provide further ways to eat fresh vegetables, pulses and grains. Chickpea flatbread, mushroom pâté, butter beans, grilled aubergine and jollof rice can appear as smaller plates or accompaniments. Sweet crepes and cakes offer a gentler finish, allowing the cafe to work equally well for a substantial lunch or an afternoon treat.
Freshly pressed juices, smoothies, coffee and herbal tea are an important part of the experience. Books, arts activity and inclusive events reinforce Katakata’s role as more than a place to eat. Its name means never give up in the Douala language of Cameroon, a message that reflects the cafe’s commitment to resilience, belonging and practical support within the community.
