Niju is a Japanese restaurant on Berkeley Street in Mayfair, shaped around katei ryōri, the tradition of home cooked food shared with family and friends. The polished dining room combines this generous style of service with precise ingredients and contemporary presentation. Dishes are intended to arrive for the table rather than in a rigid sequence, encouraging diners to build a meal across sushi, grilled food and comforting larger plates.
The opening selection can include miso soup with hijiki and tofu, grilled aubergine with sesame dressing, seasonal vegetable crudités and fried chicken with honey chilli miso. Sushi masters prepare nigiri and sashimi from tuna, yellowtail, trout, bream, scallop and other fish, offered in classic or house styles. Chef selections make it easier to compare several cuts without choosing every piece individually.
A traditional konro grill uses a blend of charcoal and cherry wood to cook seafood and meat while holding in moisture. Scottish sea trout, hay smoked tuna, Iberico pork and Herdwick lamb sit beside premium Wagyu and Kobe beef. The varying cuts and marbling allow diners to move from lighter fish preparations to deeply flavoured grilled beef within the same shared meal.
Katei ryōri dishes include chicken katsu, miso braised Wagyu, Cornish crab rice and mushrooms glazed with sweet soy and finished with an onsen egg. Broccoli with sesame, barbecued napa cabbage, salad and steamed rice complete the savoury spread. Dessert, sake, wine and cocktails extend the experience, while Nipperkin on the lower floor provides a separate listening bar inspired by 1950s Japan.
