Bar Esteban is an intimate Spanish restaurant and tapas bar at 29 Park Road in Crouch End. Opened in 2013 by Stephen Lironi, chef Pablo Rodriguez and Naroa Ortega, it has the feel of a confident neighbourhood dining room, with a long bar and closely arranged tables that suit both couples and small groups.
Tapas is prepared for passing around the table, moving between familiar Spanish standards and more individual seasonal ideas. Tortilla, jamón croquetas with parsley mayonnaise and patatas bravas supply comforting richness, while fried aubergine with honey brings together crisp texture and sweetness.
Seafood is an important part of the menu, with salt cod croquetas, squid and prawns cooked with garlic among the recurring choices. The concise small plate format lets diners balance shellfish and cured meat with vegetables, then order another dish as the meal develops rather than decide everything at once.
Sherry is a particular interest at the bar, supported by Spanish wines drawn from a range of regions, gin and tonics and cocktails. The knowledgeable drinks list and compact evening atmosphere make Bar Esteban as suitable for lingering over several shared plates as for a glass of wine and a quick bite.
