Petit Paris is an intimate French restaurant at 38–40 Grassmarket in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Checked cloths, whitewashed walls and a small outdoor terrace give the room the direct charm of a neighbourhood bistro. It opens seven days a week for lunch and dinner, with an early dining offer useful for visitors planning an evening elsewhere in the city.
Classic French dishes define the menu. Garlic snails, terrines, mussels, roast chicken, entrecôte and slow cooked stews rely on familiar sauces and traditional technique rather than novelty. Blackboard specials allow the kitchen to respond to seasonal produce and supplement the permanent bistro favourites.
The lunch and pre theatre menu provides a concise, good value introduction to the cooking. Cheese, crème brûlée, chocolate and desserts supplied by a local French bakery offer appropriately rich ways to finish. Vegetarian choices and allergies should be discussed with the team because butter, cream, bread and other common allergens feature widely in the kitchen.
French wine is a natural partner to the food, joined by beer, spirits and soft drinks. The bustling Grassmarket setting gives outdoor tables a view of one of Edinburgh’s most active historic streets. Petit Paris succeeds through atmosphere and consistency, delivering hearty Gallic cooking without turning the meal into a formal occasion.
