Best Mangal 1996 is a family run Turkish restaurant on North End Road in West Kensington, founded with the aim of sharing the food and hospitality of Turkey with London. The open charcoal grill is central to the experience, filling the room with the aroma of marinated meat cooking over fire. Warm service, late daily hours and generous portions have helped it become a longstanding local destination.
Meals can begin with cold mezze, freshly made bread and hot starters such as falafel, grilled halloumi, sucuk, calamari, muska borek and sigara borek. Lahmacun offers a thin, crisp Turkish flatbread topped with seasoned minced lamb, onions, tomato, parsley and peppers. Sharing selections bring several starters together so that groups can sample contrasting flavours without choosing only one plate.
The grill covers chicken and lamb shish, Adana kebab, chicken beyti, lamb ribs, chops, wings, liver, quail and slowly cooked doner. Each grill box is served over rice with homemade bread, salad and Anatolian sauces, while mixed grills combine several cuts in one substantial meal. The Mangal Special adds quail and doner to a selection of chops, ribs, wings and skewers for diners with a larger appetite.
Wraps tuck grilled meats, salad, garlic sauce and chilli sauce into homemade lavash, providing a more compact way to enjoy the same charcoal flavours. Large platters layer lamb shish, chicken shish, Adana, ribs, wings and mixed doner over rice for two or four people. Seafood, vegetarian dishes, salads and traditional desserts broaden the offering beyond meat and make the restaurant well suited to varied groups.
