Dnister Restaurant has served Ukrainian cooking on Romford Road in Forest Gate since 2005. The restaurant presents recipes passed through generations in a welcoming setting that also hosts gatherings and events. Its menu combines familiar Ukrainian comfort food with carefully prepared meat, fish and vegetable dishes, giving newcomers a broad introduction while offering established favourites to diners who know the cuisine well.
Starters include a warm garlic pampushek, crisp rye soldiers, traditional pickles and sliced salo with dark rye bread. Marinated herring comes with baby potatoes, while house cured salmon is paired with barberry, cucumber and rye. Mushroom machanka, pork filled benderyky and fried varenyky add richer choices, and sharing boards bring cured meats and artisan cheeses together for the table.
Handmade varenyky can be filled with potato and cheese, cabbage, beef and pork, or morello cherries. Other traditional dishes include stuffed cabbage rolls, creamy Carpathian banush, crisp potato deruny and slow cooked chanakhi with pork, mushrooms, beans and potatoes. Pork shashlik, duck leg, sea bass and a mixed Dnister platter broaden the main courses, while classic beetroot borscht arrives with smietana and a garlic pampushek.
Salads range from cucumber with dill dressing to beetroot with prunes, walnuts and pomegranate, alongside Olivier salad and grilled vegetables with halloumi. For dessert, thin mlyntsi offer sweet cottage cheese, poppy seed or caramelised apple fillings, while syrnyky come with cherry jam and whipped cream. Chocolate coated prunes, warm brownie and ice cream complete a menu shaped by generous portions and traditional Ukrainian flavours.
