Normah’s London is a small traditional Malaysian restaurant inside Queensway Market at 23 to 25 Queensway. Founded by Normah Abd Hamid, it is built around recipes passed through her family and food prepared freshly in the kitchen. The intimate dining room and limited evening service give the experience the warmth and directness of a home cooked meal.
Roti with slowly cooked dhal provides a comforting start, while crisp chicken wings, chicken bites and mushrooms offer crunch and spice. Acar nenas combines fresh pineapple, cucumber and onion in a bright Malaysian salad. These smaller plates are useful beside the restaurant’s richer coconut based curries and rice dishes.
Curry laksa combines egg noodles with coconut milk, house curry paste, tofu, bean sprouts, pak choi and a choice of king prawns, chicken or vegetables. Nasi lemak pairs coconut and ginger rice with sambal, cucumber, peanuts, egg and anchovies, then adds crisp chicken or beef rendang. The rendang is braised for hours with galangal, ginger, turmeric, lemongrass and coconut milk.
Whole seabass can be served crisp with sambal or cooked as asam pedas with chilli, tamarind, turmeric, ginger flower, tomato and okra. Nasi goreng and mee goreng add fried rice and noodle choices with chicken, prawns or vegetables. Vegan laksa, vegan asam pedas and mushroom nasi lemak extend the selection, while hot or cold teh tarik and rose flavoured bandung complete a distinctly Malaysian meal.
