The Crown & Anchor is a neighbourhood pub on Brixton Road that has welcomed drinkers since 2011. It is known for a rotating selection of local and international beer, with as many as 25 taps available at a time. The current kitchen is run by sister restaurant Booma, bringing contemporary North Indian cooking and charcoal tandoor techniques into the relaxed rhythm of a Brixton pub.
Sharing dishes include creamy malai chicken tikka, mint marinated lamb chops, Chettinad pork ribs, tandoori salmon and spicy Chennai chicken wings. Paneer in mango pickle, onion bhaji, potato cakes with chickpea curry, crisp cauliflower and spiced lamb seekh provide contrasting vegetarian and meat choices. Papadums with tomato, tamarind and mango chutneys make a simple opening while the rest of the table arrives.
Fresh naan is baked to order for rolls filled with duck, spiced lamb, tandoori chicken or paneer, vegetables and chutney. The curry selection includes tandoori chicken with tomato and fenugreek, monkfish with tamarind and coconut, a vegetable curry with plantain and okra, and slow cooked black lentils. Saffron rice and plain, butter, garlic or filled naan complete the main dishes.
Sunday retains the pub’s roast tradition, with several plates given a subtle Booma influence. Grilled pineapple with tamarind and coconut ice cream, chocolate mousse, sorbet and pistachio or coconut ice cream offer a sweet finish. Cask ale, craft lager, stout, cider, wine and cocktails are selected to sit comfortably with smoke and spice, making drinks an integral part of the menu rather than an afterthought.
