The Canton Arms is an independent pub and dining room at 177 South Lambeth Road in Stockwell. Chef Patron Trish Hilferty and Charlie Bousfield opened it in 2010, shaping a neighbourhood pub where a proper front bar and an acclaimed kitchen remain equally important.
The menu is written daily around seasonality, provenance and the best available produce. Bread is baked in house, while sausages and charcuterie are also prepared by the kitchen, supporting a selection that can move from simple bar snacks and cheese toasties to carefully cooked fish, meat and vegetables.
Large sharing dishes are a particular strength, with slow braised lamb shoulder, beef shin bourguignon and oxtail goulash designed for groups. Lunch, dinner and Sunday menus change with the market, combining European influences with generous British pub cooking and leaving space for salads, soups, pies and seasonal desserts.
Well kept cask ale, lager, cider and craft beer are joined by a constantly evolving list of organic and low intervention wines. Classic cocktails and drinks made in house, including fruit gins, digestifs and the pub’s orange wine, complete an offering built for both a quick visit to the bar and a long meal.
