Toba is an intimate Indonesian restaurant in St James’s Market, created by Indonesian chef and owner Pino after his earlier Pino’s Warung market stall. The name honours his mother’s hometown, and family recipes underpin a menu designed to introduce London diners to food from across Indonesia.
The restaurant follows a sharing concept, encouraging a table to choose several dishes. Beef rendang, nasi goreng and chicken sate sit alongside less commonly seen specialities such as gulai kambing, a tender Minangkabau style lamb shank curry.
Balinese chicken, grilled king prawns and curries bring varied spice and cooking methods, while tempeh, corn and vegetable fritters and tofu with kale offer useful meat free choices. Many dishes carry at least a gentle chilli heat, reflecting the kitchen’s commitment to Indonesian flavour.
Fresh, ethically sourced ingredients and warm service from an Indonesian team support the dining experience. Lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch services give several ways to visit, and cassava cake offers a distinctive finish after the savoury sharing plates.
