Singapulah is an immersive Singaporean restaurant on Shaftesbury Avenue in Soho, celebrating the island’s mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Peranakan food cultures. Its colourful dining room evokes the energy of Singapore’s shophouses and hawker centres, while the kitchen collaborates with established Singaporean food producers. This connection gives the menu access to noodles, sauces, fishballs, coffee and other ingredients rarely found in Britain.
Singapore laksa combines silver pin noodles with a rich coconut curry broth, dried shrimp, king prawns, tofu puffs and springy fishballs. Blk 53 wonton mee brings together thin noodles, pork and prawn dumplings, char siu, greens and sambal, with broth served separately. Bak chor mee adds minced pork, pork belly, mushrooms, meatball, fishball and crisp lardons to flat noodles tossed in seasoned sauce.
Nasi lemak centres on fragrant coconut rice with spiced fried chicken, egg, peanuts, anchovies and house sambal, while a vegan version replaces the meat with aubergine and tempeh. Zi char sharing plates include coffee glazed pork ribs, sweet and sour pork, cereal prawns and oyster omelette. Six hour beef rib rendang provides slow cooked depth, and the signature chilli crab arrives in chilli and egg gravy with fried mantou buns.
Smaller dishes such as crystal dumplings, truffle mushroom siu mai, chargrilled satay and winged bean salad make it easy to build a varied table. Desserts and drinks continue the Singapore theme through tropical fruit, coconut, black glutinous rice, kopi and teh prepared in traditional styles. Cocktails, beer and a pre theatre menu complete a restaurant that presents familiar hawker flavours with the comfort of a central London dining room.
