AUN is a small independent Japanese restaurant on Stoke Newington Church Street, opened in 2017. Its guiding idea is wakon yosai, an approach that learns from Western techniques while preserving a Japanese spirit. Traditional ingredients and European produce meet in carefully composed dishes, served with a personal touch in an intimate neighbourhood dining room.
Dinner is organised around six course set menus that showcase the kitchen’s Japanese fusion style. Signature dishes have included oyster ajillo with a crisp nori cracker, aubergine with smoky mustard miso and a sushi roll combining sun dried tomato with shiso. The tapas and izakaya inspired presentation lets contrasting tastes and textures arrive in a measured sequence rather than as one large main plate.
Lunch gives a more casual view of the same cooking through crisp karaage chicken, udon noodle soup and Japanese curry rice. Udon can be topped with vegetable or chicken tempura, while curry is paired with vegetable tempura or chicken katsu. Edamame, miso soup, rice and chips with aonori and truffle oil complete the selection, supported by plum wine barbecue sauce, Japanese mayonnaise and tonkatsu sauce.
The original Haccho dark miso gelato captures AUN’s interest in joining familiar dessert formats with distinctly Japanese flavour. Gluten free and dairy free versions of the six course experience can be arranged for diners who notify the restaurant in advance. Sake, Japanese spirits, beer, wine and tea round out a concise menu shaped by balance, creativity and the sociable rhythm of shared small plates.
