Akoko is a fine dining West African restaurant at 21 Berners Street in Fitzrovia. Created by Aji Akokomi, it brings traditional flavours and culinary ideas into an intimate contemporary setting, with a paced tasting menu rather than a conventional list of starters and main courses.
The sequence draws on dishes and ingredients associated with West Africa, interpreting them through precise modern technique. A current sample menu moves through yam with baobab and mint yaji, baked oyster with onion foam, squid, and moi moi paired with mackerel and black-eyed bean sauce.
Later courses build toward egusi with monkfish and okra, guinea hen with yam sauce, and jollof accompanied by beef, ox tongue and mbongo sauce. Desserts continue the same approach through tamarind, Aidan fruit, ehuru, white chocolate and small sweets such as black sesame fudge.
A shorter lunch menu offers a more compact introduction, while pescatarian, vegetarian and vegan versions demonstrate how carefully the kitchen adapts its experience. Wine pairings and sophisticated alcohol free pairings are available, and the full menu is designed to unfold over a leisurely meal.
