The Faltering Fullback is an independent Irish pub at 19 Perth Road in Finsbury Park. A warren of rooms opens into a famous tiered garden arranged across several upper levels, creating one of the area's most distinctive outdoor drinking spaces. Live sport, music and a welcoming first come service give the pub an energetic local character.
The kitchen is devoted mainly to Thai food, beginning with chicken satay, prawn toast, fish cakes, vegetable spring rolls, dumplings and deep fried tofu. Tom yum and coconut based tom kha soups provide warming alternatives with lime leaves, galangal, chilli and fresh herbs. Mixed starters allow a group to sample several crisp and grilled dishes together.
Diners choose tofu, chicken, beef or prawns for red, green and massaman curry, all served with rice. Pad Thai, pad see ew and chow mein cover the noodle selection, while stir fries combine basil, ginger, cashew nuts, vegetables, chilli and sweet or savoury sauces. Vegan choices are marked across several sections of the menu.
Guinness has a particularly strong following at the bar, joined by real ale, lager, cider, wine, spirits and alcohol free drinks. British bar snack baskets provide an alternative between kitchen services on selected afternoons. The combination of Thai cooking, live rugby and football, music and the climbing garden makes the Fullback unlike a conventional neighbourhood pub.
