Barge East is a floating restaurant aboard De Hoop, a historic Dutch barge moored on the River Lee in Hackney Wick. The vessel has spent more than a century on the water and now offers one of East London’s most distinctive dining settings. Guests step away from the surrounding streets into a space where the character of the old boat and the movement of the canal become part of the meal.
The kitchen centres its cooking on seasonal British produce, using fresh ingredients to create thoughtful dishes with a relaxed and generous spirit. Barge East follows a low waste approach and draws produce from its canalside gardens whenever the season allows. This close connection between the gardens and kitchen gives the restaurant a clear sense of place while encouraging the chefs to respond to what is growing well.
Below deck, candlelight, timber details and the original shape of the barge create a warm and intimate dining room. Above deck, guests can take in the waterside surroundings, while the nearby terrace and gardens provide heated and covered areas for outdoor dining. The combination makes the venue equally appealing on a bright afternoon or during an atmospheric evening beside the canal.
Seasonal meals and generous Sunday roasts make Barge East a natural choice for leisurely lunches, dinners and group celebrations. Cocktails, locally brewed beers and a sustainability minded wine selection complement the food and reinforce the restaurant’s independent East London character. Friendly service and an unusual setting help the experience feel memorable without losing the easygoing mood of Hackney Wick.
