Graam Bangla is an authentic Bangladeshi restaurant at 68 Brick Lane. Established in 1997, it has spent more than twenty five years bringing the flavours of rural Bengal and family kitchens to London. The straightforward dining room emphasises home style cooking, freshly prepared dishes and the warmth of a meal built around rice, fish, vegetables and shared curries.
Bhortas are central to the experience. Potato, aubergine, tomato, lentil, bean, prawn and fish can each be mashed and seasoned with mustard oil, onion, herbs and chilli, creating small dishes with very different aromas and textures. A mixed platter allows diners to compare several versions and is particularly well suited to sharing with plain rice.
The seafood selection reflects the importance of rivers and fish in Bangladeshi cooking. Hilsa appears as bhuna or in mustard sauce, while rohu can be paired with fragrant shatkora citrus. Boal with beans, whole roop chanda, pabda, chitol kofta, king prawn bhuna and fish egg dishes give adventurous diners a broad view of Bengali fish cookery.
Meat dishes include chicken roast, beef shatkora, lamb bhuna with potato, duck curry and kala bhuna prepared by advance order. Tarka dal, red leafy greens, sautéed potato and mixed vegetables complete the table, supported by rice and flaky paratha. Mango, sweet or salted lassi and creamy malai tea provide a traditional finish to the meal.
