SMOK’D at The Britannia is an independent barbecue pub at 44 Kipling Street in Bermondsey, within easy reach of London Bridge. The concept grew from a pop up created by the team behind BBQ Whisky Beer and Ribstock champions, bringing the flavours of American pit cooking into a relaxed British neighbourhood pub. Smoking, roasting, charring and grilling shape both the food and the inviting smokehouse atmosphere.
Starters introduce the kitchen through baby back ribs with barbecue glaze, charred flatbread with chickpea hummus, king prawns in garlic butter and buffalo cauliflower with garlic aioli. Macaroni and cheese nuggets, jalapeño poppers and crisp chicken wings add further choices designed for sharing with drinks. Vegetarian and vegan plates receive the same attention to bold seasoning and contrasting textures.
The barbecue selection centres on Jacob’s Ladder beef rib, brisket with roasted onions, pork belly rib, jerk chicken and house sausage. A pitmaster platter combines several smoked meats with fries, potato salad, peppers, macaroni cheese and grilled corn for two people to share. Burgers, fried chicken, tacos, salads and loaded fries broaden the menu, with a different meat and vegan burger special appearing each month.
Sunday brings smoked meat roasts with traditional trimmings, while desserts such as cheesecake, chocolate brownie and banana sticky toffee pudding offer a rich finish. The bar is known for its large whisky collection alongside beer, wine and cocktails, making drinks an important part of the experience. Regular comedy, poker and other events reinforce the feel of a sociable local pub built around generous barbecue cooking.
