Vicolo Romano is an independent Italian pizzeria at 420 Roman Road in Bow. It opened in 2016 with a commitment to artisanal Roman roots, fresh natural ingredients and careful service in an intimate East End setting. Sourdough bases are made in house, while the tomato sauce is prepared fresh each morning in quantities intended for that day’s service.
The menu begins with a classic Margherita topped with mozzarella, tomato sauce, fresh basil and olive oil. The Cheesy Pizza leaves out tomato in favour of mozzarella, goat’s cheese and Gorgonzola, while the Romanbella combines portobello mushroom, black olives, thyme and truffle oil. Butternut squash, courgette, feta, rosemary and garlic oil give the restaurant’s own Vicolo Pizza a colourful vegetable led identity.
Meat and seafood toppings bring further variety. The Meat Feast combines Parma ham, Milano salami and mortadella, the Tantuni uses finely chopped lamb with peppers, parsley and onion, and the Black Sea adds anchovies, black olives and rocket. Merguez sausage, pepperoni, jalapeño and a creative mixture of aubergine, fig, goat’s cheese and mortadella appear across other house combinations.
Olives, mixed leaves and garlic bread make simple starters, while a meat plate brings cured meats, rocket and house made bread together for sharing. Homemade tiramisu provides a familiar Italian finish, with a Nutella calzone, banana and almond flakes offering a richer dessert. Vegetarian recipes are prominent and vegan cheese is available, allowing more diners to enjoy the crisp sourdough bases and thoughtfully chosen toppings.
