Xin Kai Restaurant is a relaxed Chinese dining room at 50 Caledonian Road, close to King’s Cross. Its cooking draws on both Northeastern Chinese and Sichuan traditions, giving diners a choice between familiar favourites and less commonly encountered regional dishes.
The menu is particularly strong on bold savoury and chilli flavours. Smashed cucumber with garlic, dumplings in chilli sauce, mapo tofu and fish poached in hot chilli oil show the Sichuan side of the kitchen, with spice levels marked to help guests navigate the selection.
Northeastern specialities include crisp fried pork and a substantial stew of pork belly, rice noodles, sour cabbage and pork blood tofu. Whole sea bass appears steamed with seasoned soy or deep fried in sweet and sour sauce, while vegetable dishes, rice and noodles make it possible to build a varied shared meal.
Staff can guide newcomers through dishes that may be unfamiliar, and the restaurant also has a private dining room. The combination of generous sharing plates, traditional preparations and an easygoing atmosphere makes Xin Kai suitable for both a casual lunch and a more exploratory group dinner.
