The Clarence Tavern is a restored gastropub at 102 Stoke Newington Church Street. The Grade II listed building dates from the nineteenth century, while its current form combines a bright pub, garden and dining room with an ingredient focused kitchen.
The regularly changing menu follows the seasons and draws on modern European ideas. Fish, vegetables and carefully cooked meat appear in concise combinations, with chalkboard specials allowing the kitchen to respond to the best produce available.
Larger pies and slow cooked joints are designed to be shared, creating a generous centrepiece for the table. Smaller plates and desserts make it just as easy to build a meal course by course rather than order one large dish.
Local beer and a considered natural wine list support the food without losing the building’s identity as a pub. The Clarence Tavern is particularly well suited to a relaxed lunch or dinner where seasonal cooking and the atmosphere of a proper neighbourhood local matter equally.
