The French House is an iconic Soho pub and dining room on Dean Street, long associated with writers, artists, actors and the neighbourhood’s bohemian history. Its famously conversational atmosphere is protected by a tradition of avoiding music, television and mobile phones in the compact ground floor bar.
Upstairs, a small restaurant serves lunch and dinner from Monday to Saturday. Chef Neil Borthwick writes the menu by hand each day, allowing the kitchen to respond closely to seasonal produce and the fish, meat and vegetables available from its suppliers.
The cooking is simple, confident and rooted in French technique without being restricted to a fixed collection of classics. Carefully prepared starters, substantial main courses and desserts change frequently, rewarding repeat visits and keeping the experience closely tied to the day’s ingredients.
The bar offers a choice of thirty Champagnes and wines by the glass alongside familiar pub drinks, while the restaurant provides a more focused seated meal above the lively room. Limited space and two sittings at each service make advance restaurant reservations especially useful.
