St. John Bread and Wine opened opposite Spitalfields Market in 2003, originally giving the growing St. JOHN bakery a new home. Small plates and glasses of wine soon became as important as the loaves collected from the counter, and the space evolved into a restaurant with a personality distinct from the original Smithfield dining room.
The cooking follows the St. JOHN belief in purpose, simplicity and respect for the whole ingredient. British produce, offal, fish and seasonal vegetables are treated with direct technique, allowing combinations to feel clear and confident rather than hidden beneath unnecessary decoration.
Bread remains part of the restaurant’s identity, linking the dining room to the bakery story that began it. Wine is equally important, with bottles sourced through long relationships with independent growers and a list intended to be enjoyed with the food rather than approached as a separate ceremony.
Menus change daily for lunch and supper, while the afternoon bar service keeps the room active between meals. Larger groups can choose a feasting style built around platters for the table, reinforcing the generous, communal spirit that makes Bread and Wine feel relaxed despite the precision of its cooking.
